I agree. No reason at all to send ground troops to the planet. They could have just used chemical warfare, conducted air raids with conventional weapons, or nuked it from afar. Well, that's more like the original book by Robert Heinlein. The battles were taken to the bugs by much smaller numbers of ground troops, which had to be used because of their deep holes. But it was done much more believably. Each was dropped in a huge Mech-type suit. They could cover huge distances, take lots of damage and lob many tactical nukes against targets. There were NO machine guns in the original story. I can understand how the nuking mechs may have been tough to film convincingly, but the warfare in the movie came across as lame. Actually the most unrealistic thing I noticed when I first saw it was the dead bodies! They looked SO FAKE!
On another note, I just was the first disk of the special features for the Lord of the Rings I - two fucking disc for special features. Did you notice how much fucking deatil they put in that shit, they had their own people making armor and everything.
