Q: Print Advertising...Any of you try it to promote your sites & services?

Just wondering if any of you ever used print ads like magazines, newspapers, etc. to promote your sites or services.

Not necessarily adult business stuff but not disregarding either.

Only thing about print is, it's hard to judge performance if you're an online business. Unless you don't have any other ads up, etc.

I ran an ad in one of the hustler specialty rags and it did astonishingly well. You see returns for months.

Hard to track if you don't do a tracking link or a separate domain though. If you do it, use the special domain because most people are too lazy to type www.pornsite.com/xyztrackinglink

YES!!! That's what I found out. I think the difference with print is that it's in the hands of a person not floating around on a hard disk.

I looked at some of the magazines people left at one of our offices, on buses, trains, at people's homes, hotels, planes...

Every magazine had like umpteen people going through it.

As an advertiser that's like getting free publicity on a long term basis. Some magazines people will keep for YEARS.

There's a strategy to it though. Gotta have the right ad for the right audience.

I used to take out ads for my comic books and I was suprised that the ad revenue was far more than the cost of printing. I was lucky because I had targeted non conflicting advertisers and they all did awesome from it. Never had a bad comment.

I'm going to be trying something new and cheap for advertisers but high profile. That's for my new comics company next year. That's what I'm asking about because with technologies changing there're new ways to advertise and it calls on being innovative, dramatic but highly cost effective to the advertiser.

I remember back in '99 one of the writers from one of the comic companies we worked for mentioned one of my websites in an article. I had no idea why I was getting like 50,000 hits all of a sudden and couldn't track it down!

Drove me crazy cause all the stats were the same but traffic was flying in at an alarming rate. I was climbing the walls until about a week later one of the kids at the office sent me the mag in the mail. I was ironically on the phone with him when the mail arrived and then I realized what had happened. Believe it or not, YEARS later when someone picks up that mag at a store or sees it at a library or friend's house I'll get an email or something about it.

Print advertising tends to be much more expensive than online advertising, usually anyway.

my mainstream business is primarily advertised via print media. I have some links up online too, and surprisingly enough, I do get quite a few calls with it, although I really was not expecting anything from it.

Here is a great way of using the print media, 420 Calendar and purchasing advertising space on it.

They generate about 20,000 calendars every year.

If you are targeting surfers. this can be a good media.

If interested in rates you can contact me at [email protected]

Bad Dogg lemme give you props for that post because that's exactly what happened to two friends of mine I did toon calendars for. I did like 12 toons for a friend's website. They were printable once downloaded. I didn't notice that he had an ad inserted in extra space on the toon part, Plus there was extra space on the dates!

See, when you do a toon calendar or d/loadable calendar that a person can print out they can't remove your ads anyway and they just post the thing in their cubicle or garage.

                      People-will-see-it.

That's why my eyebrows leapt up when I read your post. I'm working on my 2004 calendar as I write. I do it in 3 stages:

pencil art, inked art, then color. Comics fans love to see the original art and it's as marketable as the finished art.

                      Lotta possibilities and options.

Yes, I'll contact you about your business. Looks like a great plan!

I can see that but not always. Depends on various factors.

Example, if I took out ad space on a website that was let's say 400x120 I could charge $100 a month.

Yet I could run the same ad size in a comic or mag for the same price and it stays there indefinitely.

well, my mainstream biz advertises in both the PennySaver ($170/mo - 300k homes a week) and the Yellow Pages ($40 or so a month - another 300k homes about) PennySaver kicks ass over the Yellow Pages, which really surprised me a lot.

Unfortunately, I don't think they will take an ad for SPP.

Freakin 'Pennysaver' is probably the most read document in the civilized world.

If you EVER wanna sell something, PENNYSAVER. People collect them from around the country.

No shittin', if you have the money, in one week you can everything for your house from reading the pennysaver.

Now if you were EVIL you might take out an ad in the pennysaver with a URL to one site like 'somethingyaddasaleyaddamustangyadda' and then REDIREFCT like a mo' fo' ( I'm sounding like Andy from Sex Swap )

well, while a one week ad in the Pennysaver costs more than a month in the Yellow Pages, it has always at least paid for itself, no matter how bad business was (of course, my hourly rate is pretty high, so that isn't tough to do )

Don't forget everyone, it is almost time for the tax man to come, running an advertisment in the 420 calendar could be a double winner for you, I would rather see ya get some use out of YOUR money, than give it away to good ole Uncle Sam... (although I am sure our dear old uncle will use your money that you give him every year, to better YOUR business much more than an advertisment would)....

Baddog, can explain the benifits to you, if you have any questions.
