          How is that off base?

being in poverty does not mean that you are totally without...

          Poverty has many levels....

We are talking about a national standard of living... the "American Dream" Your own house, a good job and being able to provide a good life and education for your family.

Look at todays standards compared to say the 50's and 60's... Back then, a family could still hit middle class with only one parent working... today... both parents have to work to provide a decent life for their children... (again.. talking the average.. not the exceptions).

Hell, we were not rich when I was growing up... Yes, I had birthday's, we had christmas... so do many poverty stricken people.. but to what extent do you have it?

Poverty is having to bargan shop, not having the extra $$ for the little things... poverty is just getting by.. and less.. poverty is not just a homless person on the street...

You said you lived in a trailer... nothing wrong with that... but that is not a home.. did you own it?

one car... did both parents work? how did the other get to work? Where I live.. there is no bus line... you either walk for miles to get anywhere or you drive, ride a bike whatever.... when it's 102 outside, like today.. that is no way to show up for work... all sweaty and smelly.

Did your family ever worry where their next meal was comming from? If the electric was going to be paid.. or water, heat whatever?

As for the age crack... dude, you are only 20... you have no clue yet to what life is really like... I think you are in for a rude awakening...

Seriously.. life has it's ups and downs... but when you are down and get behind on things.. bills etc... it is very hard to get caught up again.

Poverty is a bitch and is a fucking had thing to get out of... and if you seriously think that 21k a year for a family is not poverty.. then you have a lot of learning to do.

And the other point I was trying to dispute is that it's not true
that you need to make 40k to live in La, and apartments are not 2k either, unless you are living somewhere with a doorman or something.

I agree that 21k for a FAMILY is poverty if you have kids and all, but if you are by yourself it's not that bad, I would not consider that poverty.

Much more sensible - for example - to keep the most expensive health care system in the world, even if it is less effective than a long list of socialized health programs.

And heaven forbid we should have an educationsystem good enough to teach people the difference between "socialized" and "socialist".

What part of LA do you live in?

I moved away about 10 years ago... almost went back 3 years ago... when I got there... I was amazed to see how much apartments had gone up... I look at several... some areas I would not want my worse enemy living in and they wanted 900.00 for a 1 bedroom....

I needed a place to accommodate my stuff... office firniture and so on... found a place that was half the size of my townhouse here and 3 times the rent.

I would way if you have about 3 roomates then yes... 21k is doable in la... hell, I lived on 21k there... but then again.. that was 10 years ago... and I had a GF paying half the bills...

Maybe when you get some real life experience you'll get taken seriously. Going to Taco Bell on the way home from school doesnt qualify.

I live in Westminster in Orange County. My old apartment was
$1,150 for a 2 bedroom in (what I think) is a decent area. Other people's may opinions may vary about the neighborhood. But it was a gated complex, landscaped inside, had a pool, jacuzzi, fitness room. I think that is more of a fancier place, I know of another place that's $900 for a 2 bedroom that is in a more "ghetto" area with no covered or secured parking, and it's not gated, but it will do. It's not THAT bad.
When I first left home and lived on my own for the very first time, this was around 3-4 years ago, I used to pay $675 for a studio. The neighborhood "looked" ghetto, but it wasn't that bad , to me anyways. Some of my friends thought the meighborhood looked "scary" or "dangerous" but I got used to it so it was nothing to me.

But real estate prices for BUYING a home are pretty high, nice normal 2 story houses here are going for almost $500,000 and that's just for a "normal" 3-4 bedroom.

I don't really care about gangbanger's hanging outside the house, I have a roommate that likes to bring them INSIDE my house which is even worse (her bf is one of them), but that's a whole new different topic

You guys are mislead by numerous ghetto movies and the news media to believe that most poor live in cities. Actually, I forgot where from and the exact number, but more poor people are actually in rural areas than in metropolitan areas. So "getting out of the city" isn't always a cure.

I don't have a problem with polverty, as long as there are sufficient opportunity structures to not become poor any more. Some people just plain need help, others do not.

However, I don't like it when children have to live, and grow up in polverty though. Some toddler can't go out and start "bling blingin." They have to suffer it out and live through the shitty reality of their parents. Some people in here might brag about making bank in their teens, but I know they weren't doing jack shit when they were three or four.

For me, 21k, even for one person, not this family stuff, is poor. I don't care about some guy in some third world country picking through rivers of shit to find metal trinkets to sell. Anybody who can accept being on the bottom of a human hierarchy and thinks all is well because "at least i'm not those guys..." has no ambition and no drive to improve their lot in life. The "at least i'm not those guys" is a cop out to make people feel better for their current situations. There is always going to be somebody much worse and much better off than anybody at any given time. People should not just accept where they are now just because somebody is below them. If I didn't feel poor at 21k, what would make me want to make more?

Maybe if people who are already in poverty didn't keep having kids, the number of people living in poverty wouldn't keep growing.

As a single mother who worked her ass off and made decent amounts of money in spite of not having a college degree and not being able to work much more than 9-5 due to taking care of my son, I don't have a lot of sympathy for those who would rather keep pumping out kids so the government will give them larger free housing, a bigger welfare check and more food stamps every month.

Two car payments totalling $700/mo? Again, fucking stupid. Do you really think other people give that much of a shit about what you're driving? They don't - they care about what THEY are driving. Buy a damn car outright.

Can't feed 2 people on $400/mo? Evidently you don't know how to cook. I feed 4 people on $400/mo and quite often, less - but then again I don't fill my fridge with frozen pizzas, beer, and $3 chilled coffee drinks and whatever the fashion drink of the day is.

I know a family of 5 that lives *quite* well on $800/mo. They're very happy. They have a big house, lots of land (that they purchased, it wasn't given to them), and anything they want/need.

There are some parts of the country that 2k a month for an apt is average... like San Fran, New York and most other large cities...

as for cars.. sure you can get a cheap car but sometimes you pay more in repairs than you do on a payment for something that is in good order...

it is easy to snag bits and pieces from posts to make your point... I never said I was in poverty... I am middle class.. maybe lower middle class... I was just saying that for most people.. the average family... that is not enough to live on comfortably....

When I 1st moved to Phoneix... I had a job paying 24k a year.. my 1 bdrm apt was 650.00 my car was paid for.. and I was still living from paychek to paycheck... nothing fancy... not the best neighborhood but not the worse either... just average... and I was just getting by...

granted.. i still did not concider myself poverty stricken but I was by far a long way off for being comfortable either.... Shit... the small things add up quickly... Like going to costco... get it it's only 5.00.. and that too and that.. next thing you know you are over 200.00...

granted some people are happy living a simple life.. at least on the outside... but when there is a notice on the door that your utilities are going to be shut off for failure to pay.. how happy are they then?

Use Lensman's program and get the most for your hard earned traffic.

It's the same thing with California. You're paying all of that extra money just for the privilege (??) of living in Cali... and it's just silly. The same amount of money will get you so much more elsewhere.

But trying to set *any* type of bar on a standard of living by basing it on what things cost in places like LA, San Diego, Chicago... you just can't do that and expect to come out of it anywhere near correct.

There's lots of places around the country where you can... you just have to think outside of the California state line.

I am from a small town in western PA... so i know what you mean... however... you have to figure in that the jobs in smaller towns, sities and so on do not pay as well... so where your cost of living is lower so are the salaries.

In the USA, you are consider poor if you make under $21,667 a year. Growing up in Peru $800 a month was consider a good wage. US government programs only push you back up to the threshold. There are very, very few truly poor people in this country.

The following information is based on 2001 numbers..but I couldn't find the numbers of year 2002. But even so, it's very troublesome:

The official poverty rate rose to 11.7 percent in 2001, the first increase since 1993. One in five black children lived below the official poverty level as did 16 percent of all US children?about 12 million US children.

Even this official poverty level (about $14,000 for a family of three in 2001) is abysmally low and utterly inadequate. The Economic Policy Institute (EPI), a union-backed research group, calculated a more realistic family budget level with income sufficient to avoid serious hardship, such as missing meals, being unable to pay rent or having the phone disconnected. They estimate that two-and-a-half-times as many families fall below this level income as fall below the official poverty line.

Also in 2001, median household income declined for the first time since 1991, falling 2.2 percent to $42,228. The income of the typical black household fell 3.4 percent in 2001, to just $29,000.
