    Hard drive question

I was just working on a PC and pulling out the hard drive slide bay that had 2 hard drives bracketed in it and it was sticking so I gave it a stronger pull and it slid out of the PC, but out of my hand also and hit the kitchen floor. About a 3 foot drop.

Haven't plugged them in yet to see, but wandering do you think that fall will normally fuck them up? They were inside the bracket so they didn't get any physical damage that I can see.

    What a clutz.

Might still work.. no reason to NOT try it!

If it's an IBM harddrive, don't count on it, though. Even the slightest flick will make them unstable.

No and it was the bracket structure that took the impact point. Not the drive. they were still screwed in.

They could still work but any of them (or both) might develop bad sectors in the future. Better back up your data, or transfer all your data onto a new harddrive. You could get a 120Gb today for about $90US.

Might be OK. You'll notice on boot up if you get any errors or hear any weird grinding noises. You shouldnt move your puter while its running cause any slight movement and it can scratch the drive. There is 2 big magnets that run on each side of the drive.

Amazing looked liked they survived the fall ok so far. No grinding noises or anything.

They were all backed up and stuff so its not a big deal. I was just thinking I might have ruined them for future use. Man, they build these things like tanks I guess.

                              Thanks for the input.

Man, you're lucky. One time I had turned around to talk to somebody and when I turned back toward my desk, I hit the corner of the hard drive on it.

Fucker never worked after that, but it was some off brand in a compaq or something a few years ago. I'm sure my Maxtors or Western Digitals would take the abuse.
