    Server Load Question

I'm looking at getting a server to host my images and am trying to figure out how many requests would be reasonable to consider pointing at a p4 2ghz, 1gig ram Linux box located at rackshack, also what would be the first thing to improve when getting towards the upper limit of the above setup.

I'm guessing that ~99.99% of the requests will be for image files with an average filesize of ~25k(? typical images from a gallery), no scripts or other serverside processing.

I've done a bit of reading and some internal load testing though can't seem to find anywhere with real life information. I am also aware that various optimisations will make a big difference, I'd prefer comments on stock standard setups (any optimisations will be a bonus when they are done)

Hosting providers: pls feel free to spam, though understand that I'm on a low budget to start with and obviously if you provide some help you will stick in my memory. I'm not overly interested in a managed server.

I'd say you should contact me and I'll put freebsd on that server.
You wont have to worry about tweaking settings after that.

if you want to keep it linux, just for images,
I suggest you use apache2 with a bit of tuning and you should't have a problem, considering that you won't do more than 10mbps.
its a piece of cake for a server, with no scripts, to handle that.

Load: with no (or not much) scripting going there really isnt any need to do much for you. The server that you mention can easily handle 10-20mbit of galleries. Sure, freebsd might be able to help you out, but with "only" 10mbs of pure static content delivery you wont have any problem

Spam: you might want to check out www.10mbs.com - you wont regret it

Nothing in your post strikes me as making a dedicated server absolutely necessary. Perhaps I missed something??

Unless you are using more than 200GB per month I dont see why you couldnt get by on a good semi dedicated plan. If you do decide to go with a dedicated server we'd like the opportunity to make a competitive offer.
