how fast is MySQL ??

Im not an expert on this but mysql can easily handle anything that the standard webmaster needs.

If you need a more robust database with aditional features I would suggest Postgresql other wise mysql will do the job.

As far as databases go, MySQL is one of the fastest. Most definitely not one of the most stable databases, and it lacks quite a few more advanced options, but it is fast.

Whether you need a database or not depends on what you want to do though. Can't really say anything about that without knowing what it is you want to do.

Like I already said, it depends on what you want to do. Do you want to retrieve single entries by id? Or do you want to search for specific entries?

If you are holding a big database, querying that using indexes with MySQL would be faster. But if it's something small, filesystem might be better ..

As punkworld said, that depends on many factors. Size of your data, speed of your system, HDD type, etc.
