Probably because Bill wants everyone to love windows format clips over MPEG's.

but it's true... I formatted mine and now I have no problems. Before it used to crash frequently. The older versions are more stable (try v.7). Or use mplayer1 (the ugly, no frills one that comes installed default with every windows). However that one gives problems d/l codecs if your security settings are too high
