Hosted Galleries from Sponsors are kicking ass! When I started day to day operation of AMPLAND in 2000 the site was getting about 250,000 uniques a day. And the primary source of income was selling text links.
NOW we are getting close to 800,000 uniques a day and just off of sponsor hosted galleries we are grossing over $750,000 a year! When I add in other ad revenue we are popping WAY over a cool million a year on Ampland.
TGP's Dying?
We just keep growing and growing!
What has died is the sudden glut of thousands upon thousands of former "customers" who suddenly joined affiliate programs and became "webmasters" and started freeloading off of our traffic by having us post their galleries.
I know you might say..."well it was our galleries that kept people coming to your site"
Maybe...but since day one we have made Ampland into WAY more than just galleries. We were the first with daily humor back in '96 and we just keep adding things for people to do.
And as I said...once I got RID of the public submitters...our traffic went through the roof!
Maybe it's because we are honest with the surfers and don't allow pop-ups and don't have any blind links.
I think you might be confusing some of the "fake" tgp's who only exist to blindlink and trade traffic with other "fake" tgp's in a stupid attempt to get big numbers.
The "real" TGP's like us still have top quality traffic. That's why my link spots aren't available to the general public for sale. I keep 'em for myself because they are just too valuable.
No, the TGP's will never die.
But I'm afraid our days of being a FREE SITE are going to come to an end soon.
That's what is really going to happen. The government will very soon shut down ALL free sites.
So the name of this post should be: "The Death Of Free Sites and how it will really happen."
Well how it will really happen is...one day John Ashhahahahaha is just gonna say "Free sites are illegal because ANYONE including CHILDREN can access them."
And the day that happens I will make 3 or 4 million dollars when Ampland becomes the cheapest and biggest pay site on the planet!
It's called "evolution" baby! And the law of un-intended consequences!
Well, I have to agree with you about gallery posters. I quit taking submissions as soon as I started. I would really like to take submissions but cheaters and goof balls just make it impossible for me. Until the explosion of hosted galleries I was just makeing galleries for my TGP myself. I could definitely approve them faster.

I really don't think that TGP will die completely but I have seen a few bite the dust. I think the biggest players will survive. It's going to be like the big search engine battle a few years back.
Eventually only a few will dominate and the rest will be just clinging on to the edge.

So my "Death of TGP" should be considered the same as the "death of SE's". Most died but it's still big biz.
