Well, didn't really get the source code, I've always had a copy at home from when I designed it at home So I really didn't steal, I just never deleted. And I've inproved and made it better and it has changed over 40%, so it isn't the same

Aaron, that's a pretty big leap to say that a log file from a main element like this board is "spying". You can't possible compare a log file of that nature to a video camera in a cubicle or reading someone's email.

It's just not even close to being the same thing.

Somebody was caught doing something they should not have done because of a peice of software that was in place.

I have a natural tendency to trust people that work for me.

I show them respect and expect them to do their work in return, with a reasonable amount of dedication.

Ive been burned a few times now and Im learning.

I now have monitoring software installed. Fuck trust, they dont deserve mine.

As the Attorney General says it is ok to spy on people and collect information about them. Such information would only be used against them if it is useful.

okay, but that's stretching it and you know it. The log file's main function is not spying on employees. In comparison, a video cam in a cubicle has no other function than to spy. Just because information from the log file can be used to track down certain actions when necessary does not make it a spy tool.

I think there is a huge difference in an hourly employee and a commission based employee. An hourly wage earner is supposed to be spending the entire hour doing work to be paid. A commission based employee has a set of goals and criteria to meet in order to be paid.

It's much easier to measure the productivity of a commission based employee, they either meet their quotas or they dont.

Hourly employees are generally way less skilled and require alot more supervision.

At the end of the day I think it boils down to disclosure. Just like when you call customer service at the bank and the recording tells you the call may be monitored, if the employees are aware they may be monitored then what's the big deal?

On that note, did anyone see the news story a couple weeks ago about the mayor that hired some PIs to track city employees and found that nearly all of them were doing personal shit on company time? And worse?

I think alot of this can be solved by changing the way we think. Look chain someone somewhere for any given period of time and MAKE them be there you are basicalyl punishing them. Look at school we all hated that.. Same thing. But give them goals and base those goals around reward. Now we are talking.

Imagine if you gave an employee specific goals to accomplish each week. Telling them they have three months to prove themselves. In those first three months they have to work the normal 8 to 5. After that if they get all their work done and done properly they are only required to be in the office from 10 to 3pm each day. Other than that they are free to do as they will as long as they get all goals accomplished. Ask for more work and accomplish more in a given period of time and you are rewarded accordingly.

How productive do you think those employees will be? How much shit do you think they would give you? How much respect do you think the employer would get in this scenario?

good points on both sides actually...

i think it ultimately comes down to the nature of the business and the position in question. Like Kimmy said, not everyone needs to be monitored. Some DO need to be monitored.

But I think if someone is going to monitor an employee, it's probably better to let them know it. The knowledge of being monitored goes a long way to deterring the kinds of things you're monitoring for. If you don't let them know, it's pretty much a crap shoot on what you'll discover. If you're looking to catch someone doing something they shouldn't be, for the purpose of getting rid of them, that's certainly one way to do it. If you're monitoring to increase productivity, then there should be no reason not to let them know they're being watched.

In general, I think it's wrong. Well, "wrong" isn't even the right word here.... it shouldn't be necessary for most businesses. You shouldn't have to monitor your people every minute of the day. If you do, there's something inherently wrong in your formula. The obvious exceptions to this would be someone like a bank teller or similar positions.

not at all. But the 7-11 cashier isn't handling the enormous quantities of cash that a bank teller is. The monitoring of bank tellers isn't so much about watching the employees as it is a 24/7 watchdog for idiots with notes and guns.

I really think some of that depends on what type of company you have.

A high security company would obviously do all of those things, such as a company with government contracts, etc.

It would even depend on the department maybe. People do tend to get lazy if they can get away with it. It's unfortunate that the majority of the work force MUST be supervised.

In general though, I can't see any reason for a normal company to monitor e-mails. That's mail. It could be considered a privacy issue. Computers are a tool for business though, bought and maintained by the company. If they use it for surfing porn, games, etc, it should be taken away and give them a word processor until they get thier shit straight.

If they have a job though that entails a lot of boredom and not much real work, and if it doesn't mess with productivity, why care?
