What's your opinion on spying on your employees?

Is it right to keylog their pc's, read their e-mails, listen in on their phone lines, install secret vid cams to monitor offices, etc?

If the company doesnt want the employees visiting adult sites, humor or anything else just look the logs and block the sites one by one.

Imagine if the guy writes an e-mail for his wife "Honey, be ready for me. Go find that ping-pong balls so we can have some fun on the bed tonight. Your Woody Hubby". This guy wouldn't be respected by his bosses.

I wouldn't do it privately. I would do it openly and tell the employees that is what I am doing. Productivity will go up for the ppl that stay, and the people that have "free spirits" or are unproductive will quit. I know when I know I am constantly being monitored I work harder then none at all.

If you have employ that sort of method to ensure your employees are doing their jobs then you should rethink your approach.

That's what deadlines are for...that's what management is all about. Take the time to know what they're working on, get status reports, etc.

If you want to divide your workforce and kick morale in the teeth...go big, big brother.

That is the problem right there....he would be using his employers time and computers to do personal tasks. I used to be the cheif security officer for a large technology company and ANYTHING that is produced on company computers is the property of the company. This is a standard for any business.

Of course having rules world be easier: "If we find that you're visiting any site unrelated to the job, you'll be notified and if you persist you'll be fired". Heheh.

Block thousands and thousands of sites, one by one. Excellent idea.

Overall, I think it needs to be a case by case basis. If an employee always meets deadlines, goes beyond their call of duty, and never has any problems... they deserve a little room to wiggle. If an employee is late with deadlines, sends email and instant messages all day long, and has a problem with the phone... something needs to be done.

In my other life as an ISP I installed a permanent link and server at a small company. When I went in a couple of days later to fix up the CEO's netscape config, he had about 10 porn sites open. The funny thing is that I was the one that turned red, he didn't seem bothered at all.

Ofcourse the company must have a firewall and block the sites with filters. I meant blocking the sites that the filters doesn't catch

Apples and Oranges Aaron. You don't hire kids. You don't pay your kids. You don't care how your employee's day at school was.

As a father I know that when my daughter begins her foray into the online world that there will be many augmentations technology wise, to my own monitoring and interaction. I also know that you can't raise a kid by watching what they do and telling them 'Yes' you can do this and 'No' you can't do that...

At some point you have to relinquish control over your childs experience of the world around them...and net nanny can't do shit for you then bro. Only proper interaction, guidance and the focus on a problem solving and free thinking can give a child the tools to deal with the 'BAD' things in life...

Don't make blanket suppositions about my idea of parenthood.

Anybody who thinks that employees are not just like children is blind to the facts. Employees are often more manipulative than any child could ever think of being. You have to watch those fuckers like a hawk or they will fuck you over and rob you blind if given half a chance.

Indeed. If an employer is so far removed from the work needing to get done and being done in his company that he needs to install camera, keylogs, etc...then he has no idea what his company is doing.

If the employee is on my dime, he/she forfeits privacy unless he/she is the restroom or breakroom.

I would have it as an open policy though and not as something I spring on an employee.

If the employee was commission based I wouldn't care as much as if they were an hourly or salaried employee.

Bottom line, it's my time, my dime, I have every right to monitor my employees and what they say and do.

Now, if they are home-based or when they leave the office, then I could give a damn...

It's called structure and every team has one or they are not a team in the first place.

And for the record...Employees ARE hired to do the bidding of the employer. Too bad more employers don't show their employees a little respect. All these companies bitch about employee dedication but then they piss on their employees. WTF is that all about? If you respect people, they will be more apt to respect you in return.

I am referring to the average corporate company here...and the average company treats their employees like shit.

Because Finding Nemo did so well in the box office this person got a half years salary as a bonus. You think that person is ever going to fuck that company over? I don't think so. Money makes the world go round. Show an employee what they are worth and give them bonuses for completely projects, and you will find loyalty. A person doesn't have to be commissioned to earn bonuses and these bonuses can make more productive and loyal employee's.

Or on top of that cheer quitely to themselves when they land an employee that will do the work for half the pay. So yeah it is human nature to fuck people over. But there are ways around it
Several...but not in the specific cases that I am referring to.

I see that the Adult.com "team" has taken a decided interest in sticking together in this thread. I am not about to spill anybodies dirty laundry here but you all know that even your happy team has had it's share of internal issues.

                                                                                    What's my point?

Nobody is perfect and as an employer, you want and need your business to be as perfect as it possibly can...Even if that means resorting to monitoring the activities of your employees.

Allow me to present you with an example...I recall when a certain mod of GFY deleted one of my threads. That mod was later outed for doing so. How did Lensman know which person deleted the thread? The log files...Which are nothing more than a way to track who is doing what. This happened in your own office. These are cold, hard facts.

                                                                                    Prove me wrong.

Everybody was cheating, either stealing clothes when they left work at night, not ringing up all the items when friends would come in to shop, shorting the register, and on and on.

The funniest part of all was the store's security people ended up being the biggest thieves working there. They caught them on video cams taking stuff out of the shipping containers as they arrived into the loading dock. So the people entrusted to watch other employee theft were themselves stealing more goods than anyone.

Employees have a natural inclination to steal from what I've seen over the years.

This is very true! If my old company gave me a little more respect for the program's that I made them. I wouldn't have quit. But making them over 100K in profits and still having to work 6 days a week, and getting a lousy $500 bouns. Fuck that. So I quit, and got the source code!
