any suggestions?
I have a pretty tricked out PSE (Precisions Series Edge) that I have hunted Deer, Elk, Bear, and Cougar with. It has been a great bow. My dad has a sweet Martin and says he will never go with another brand.
Go to a local archery store and check out a few of them. Most of the archery stores around here have lanes that you can test the bows in.
Just like most other things in life..This comes down to a personal preference. A lot of people like Glocks but I would never own something that feels like a peice of shit when you pull the trigger.
Shoot a few...Make a decision, then dial that fucker in!
I'd strongly suggest looking at either PSE or HOYT....
Both are big companies, with a wide variety of products, and more importantly, both stand behind their products 100%.
If you are just starting out.. dont get something terribly radical or difficult to pull under stress... remember, the poundage that you can pull on the nice warm range, and what you CAN PULL in the cold woods, all bundled up in camo, are NOT necessarily the same thing... a common mistake I've seen happen 1000's of times...
If you are not hunting for any type of big game, dont go overboard with poundage... 60 Pounds is plenty... I've been hunting and competing with 58 pounds for many years... it zips most game with no problem! ;-)
When you find something comfortable to pull, and shoot for an extended period of time, PRACTICE YOUR ASS OFF...
Most bow shots in the woods are under 20 yards.. most under 15 yards... so get proficient at that distance.
I have only bow hunted for five years, I use a Martin,
BUT - My dad was recently trying out several different brands at our range - and I came to the conclusion that bows are something that dont have much room for improvement, so I think anything you are *comfortable* with and *used to* will do exactly what you need, there are not a ton of performance variables like on rifles. Just find a bow you enjoy, and practice with it like hell.
As for rifles... I use a simple 1960's Remington .270- It has done everything I have needed and never needed to be replace. For the collection I have a few other rifles because they are badass at super long ranges, like the .338 UltraMag - My dad shoots a Browning A Bolt 7 mag-
All these things come down to what you end up liking after using them, so just do like some others said^ and go to the local shop and check them out.
