I'm doing the same, and that's why I'm asking for a explanation about it from somebody who DOES know.

I heard it's working like a karma for somebody ;o) He said me, SE is sending traffic to me, so it's fair to send traffic back to SE.

I'm not sure very many people actually know what's going on w/ s.e.'s these days.

Was there ever a time that anyone really knew ?

As for searches it may not always make sense to link to others but if you have a nice db of sorts it may make sense to add a search box to look through that.

                and
I'm sure the ones that do know the ins and outs will not just let go of such info for anyone in the public to see/use/abuse/reuse

                    That's nonsense. A search engine's for searching

I'm 99% sure linking back to a SE is useless. I have a couple nice se spots, and don't/never have link to SEs.

I link to a search engine on my pages, but it's our own search engine. Does that count?

On some pages on some sites, I link to google and others, and for various reasons.

It is quite probably that the google bot will spot a google link on your site, and adjust your ranking accordingly.

It's a non-sense to link to an SE, any link without getting eventually anything from it is just wasted traffic.

think about it, do you think google really cares if you have a link back to it? of course not. higher ratings can be achieved by have other websites link back to you - the PageRank technology.

if you have good, relevant content, then you will be rewarded with a higher placement.

the mighty search engines don't need your nod. concentrate on building content or worthwhile link exchanges.
