If Al Gore was in office...

The more I think about this.... What do you think he would have done differently from bush?

He wouldn't touch Iraq

he would have done nothing. then just create a bunch of 6 dollar an hour jobs, and a false sense of security.

As compared to a huge war deficit and a sense of impending doom?

all the same stuff was said about reagan, and it turned out he was exactly right.

What's really sad is that I can't even think of a name of a democratic candidate for president that I know...

Well anything we say about what would have happened "if" Gore was in office is speculative but here's my educated guess.

We would have sent troops to Afghanistan.
We told them to give up Osama, they wouldn't, so we send in the troops.

The difference would have been that when practically every other country in the world offered to help us with Afghanistan, we would have accepted their help and not said "No, we don't need you"
That pissed off alot of countries and was part of the reason we had such a tough time trying to get NATO and the UN to go along with us in Iraq.

Also remember, the Sept 11 attacks were the first time that NATO ever invoked the mutual defense part of its treaty, saying "an attack on one is an attack on all" and we thumbed our nose at them and said we'd do it ourselves.
That's bad bad bad diplomacy.

We would have given the inspectors longer in Iraq. If necessary we would have went to war there, but we would have had the backing of the UN and a multi national force to do it with.
Also, it wouldn't cost us 87 billion a year to rebuild Iraq, because we'd have the support of the UN and financial and military support from most of the world.

And EVEN IF IT DID cost 87 billion a year, we'd be able to afford it because Gore wouldn't have taken us from a record breaking surplus to a record breaking deficit with a bunch of tax cuts for wealthy people.

Also, everyone thinking that Bush is a "tough guy" and all this patriotic fervor that people attach to him is simply because he was in the right place at the right time.

Before 9-11 most Americans didn't have a very high opinion of Bush. In times of crisis people tend to rally around their leaders, regardless of who those leaders are.
If Gore had been in office most people would feel the same way about him that they now feel about Bush.

Before 9-11 Bush's approval ratings were in the 40s.....a week after 9-11 his approval ratings were in the 90s.....and he hadn't done anything yet!!
That's just the way it works.


Also, if Gore was in office
The top people at Enron would be in jail awaiting trial.

Halliburton wouldn't have been given the Iraq contract outright, it would have went through the bidding process like all other govt contracts do and probably would have saved us alot of money.
