                                                                                          this doesn't mean he's using expired domains necessarily, I've got a site with several thousand doorways listed on Google and I've never linked to it from an outside page, but over time Google has spidered the crap out of it all by itself

                                                                                                  That could be a fairly nasty privacy issue if it's true... however:

                                                                                                  I see spiders hitting the root page of newly registered domains all the time - no content yet and certainly not linked from anywhere.
