This Type Of Shit Pisses Me Off

Guy comes to you with a story:

'Fletch, someone referred me to you for design. I have been ripped of by 2 designers. The first I paid 50% to and he never delivered anything. The second I paid half as well, and all I got what this. (he posts a url to a psd) and never heard from the guy ever again.

Can you please do something to help me get this site rolling? I am behind a couple weeks, and have invested a lot of money in this and NEED to get this going.'

So, one of my faults has now played against me.

I like to try and work things out with people who have had issues with crook designers, and I am guilty of believing a sob story and trying to work things out.

The guy shows me half finished work and wants me to finish the site.

I agree to do this for no money up front and that I could have something for him to look at within a few days.

I took time to work on this guys site, finished it.

And its been weeks and never heard from the guy ever again.

Ever mesage ignored all email ignored.

Aint that a bitch?

And people wonder why designers ask for 50% up front.

I will NEVER do any work up front without 50% anymore.

I used to let some slide, but no longer.

This shit has gotten old.

Fuck it, lets drink.

this wasnt for a paysite.

it was for an adult search engine.

if any of you need a similar design or think this design could be altered and used to your benefit I am willing to change it out to fit your needs.

hell all colors and things can be changed.

agreed. this is how I do it all the time.

shit a lot of people simply pay me 100% up front the ones that keep coming back, its easier on them and me. they dont have to remember to pay me and i dont have to remember to remind them hahaha ;) but I agree totaly but as I said, i sometimes fall into the trap too and fall for these stories.

its an exception which is why this is the first time its ever happened to me.

i always pay 100% after delivery,

because I wont pay for crap, that i wont use,

and I always get away with it, and never rip off a designer,

but I agree never give work with out a deposit up front,

unless its work for someone like me,

moral of the story,

if your designing for reputable people you can bill them a week after delivery and still get payed,

so lose the dead beat no money whore clients,

Unfortunately the reality is that this week tends to turn to months sometime from the best of customers. If you're a one man army like most desigers, it's real though having to wait this long to get paid.

As I said, I have guys who come to me for galleries every couple weeks, some once a week.

And THOSe tguys pay me 100% up front. Why?

There is no need to question what you get if you get rid of those dead beat designers who you are AFRAID to pay 100% to or at least 50%.

bottom line is its hard to trust anyone, from either side.

You guys need to run an offline business sometime. Net 30's to net 90's are common practice. This isn't for a few hundred bucks either, lots of times it's for tens of thousands of $$$$.

Yeah and retail stores are the worst. Those fuckers try to screw you every time and pay late.

I've seen retailers file bankrupcy and fuck tons of small vendors. And then continue business. And small claims court sucks ass. I gave up a design business I really enjoyed because of fuckheads who don't pay. It was a pain in the ass and I had to sue people.
