Just picked up a copy of Cleaner. Who else uses this?...

What an AMAZING piece of software. I have adjusted the settings to my liking, taking in mpeg1, adjusting, outputting mpeg1, and I couldn't be happier with the result.

HOWEVER... it is painfully slow. 8 minutes of work per 1 minute of video.

Is this a problem with my PC or something? Is it SUPPOSED to be this slow?! There just aren't enough hours in the day to process 80 minutes of video. Could there be any way to speed up?

      I am using this on:

      P4 1800
      256 RAM
and about 40GB of free space on the drive.

Low specs for video editing, but it doesn't grind to a halt. I think the slowness is more software related than hardware related. I'm still able to listen to mp3s, read gfy, check email with this this machine while it's encoding. It goes just as fast whether I leave it alone or do something else on the machine. But I will try it on a laptop with higher specs tomorrow, and see if it goes any faster.

In the meantime, could there be any settings within the software to adjust that will make this thing run faster?

Look in your "Windows Task Manager" and see how much resources that program is using while it's rendering.

1G of ram will make a big difference. Cleaner runs just about all night every night in our studio crunching SoulCash hosted gallery clips and member videos into multiple formats at once.

If you ever want to shoot the shit about settings give me a holler our number is at the bottom of soulcash.com.

                  Cleaner GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More ram man...256 is silly stupid with the cost of ram these days.
Matter of fact running a system like that your just punching yourself in the cock by having 256 in it.

While having a good deal of memory is important in video editing, sometimes it doesn't matter how much mem you have, if the software you are using is designed for ultra compression.

Cleaner has always been a sloooow creature. But that is because it has about the highest compression rate and encoding design on the market. The smaller you want your file to be, the longer it will take to encode it.

Vegas (aka Vegas Video) puts out as good a quality encoding job as cleaner does at a fraction of the amount of time imo. When I saw how much faster Vegas was, I dropped Cleaner like a hot potato simply because of the time factor. If you're in no hurry, then cleaner is fine..but when you are on a time limit/budget, then cleaner ain't really the best choice for video editing.

cleaner kicks ass, and yes it is a beast in terms of slowness. i have a dual processor G4 that spends almost all of it's time encoding video...

Yep, get more RAM...and I think can also specify the thread priority in one of the menus. The default on focus I think is the highest, but when it's not focused it just normal. Set it to the highest possible and let it run.

Good hard drives will make a big difference aswell.

The software can be super fast but you can only write to the drive as fast the drive can go.

Doesn't really affect encoding much but when you're cutting clips it will.

Nce program you have wth blingcash. $25 per signup is a good addition to the 50/50 stuff. I wish more smaller sponsors would at least pay $25 a trial

RAM does not do much for video rendering....
                                        Don't listen to them.
You need AT LEAST 1gig period.
What makes the difference is your processor. Go get yourself an old dual proc Netserver p3 500 ?600 and is will work 3 times as fast as a 3ghz single proc computers. (There is a reason that big rendering houses use MULTIPLE servers sporting multiple procs for their farms.)
Cleaner is slow. The new version is a bit faster. Pro coder is better.
Comparing Vegas video to cleaner is comparing apples to oranges.

well said.. try using a Dual 2600 AMD processor for your video encoding.

i know a number of Webmasters using such powerful machines to do some video editing.

I've had it working on a file for almost 11 hours, and with over 8 hours remaining... this is ultra slow, although I did opt for quality over speed.

                                              Waiting patiently.

You definitely need a beast of a machine and plenty of time on your hands and patience but its well worth it.

get a dual processor machine. if you're doing serious amounts of encoding, it's the only way to go.

Have cleaner 4, 5.1 and the newest version. Running on a dual AMD 2600 machine with a gig of ram encoding DV AVI to WMF Works at real time, Mpeg 1 takes 4 minutes per minute of video. Mpg2 to wmf 30 seconds per 1 minute of video or double time. All seem to be about the same speed for the most part. We don;t do a ton of encoding as we still are working out all the settings etc, Need to find a good book on how to take video from one format to the next while getting the best results/speed.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

HOWEVER... it is painfully slow. 8 minutes of work per 1 minute of video.

Is this a problem with my PC or something? Is it SUPPOSED to be this slow?! There just aren't enough hours in the day to process 80 minutes of video. Could there be any way to speed up?
I run Cleaner on a P4 2.8 with a gig of Ram. My 30 minute videos take 6.5 hours or so to encode to 3 different formats.

Just set the batch and go to bed.

This machine was specifically re-designed from the ground up for video editing though. 500 Gigs or hard drive space. WD Special Edition drives...bla bla bla....
