Did you speak to a manager or someone higher up than a tech. Im sure they would love to know how shitty their security is. I would have told them to put better security measusres in place or Im pulling my sites and going to another host

If you've got any sort of volume, don't deal with "hosts". Find a good colo-facility, preferably one owned by a tier-1 bandwidth provider. Rent a cage or a cabinet from them and hook up to their pipe. Get your own servers and have your own people admin them. Run your own mail, dns, etc. I'd even say go as far as getting your own ip allocation from ARIN. You'll have far fewer headaches.

Originally posted by fletcher I've had the same thing happen, I just said who I was and they didn't ask for an account password or any verfication of information. Kinda scary.
I am urging everyone here to test their HOSTS now!

I have in the past...very good advice...
fortunately my host doesn't have root on my box, they'd have to pry it open the hard way to redirect anything ;)

I deal with the direct owner of my hosting company and i have had people do work for me in the past that required them to do something to my server and each time my host would contact me to make sure everything was legit before making any changes or giving out any info!

I'd agree with this. I do all the admin on my server except for DNS, so I know what's going on. Helps that I've been doing UNIX since 1977. But find a good (and I mean very good) admin to run your stuff, someone who has lot's of years of experience doing system admin for your servers software.

Everytime I try to call myself it's busy
Seriously, this is some fucked-up and scary shit.
Folks, remember how the old rule was "if you're serious, you'll get paid hosting"?
It's moved up... with the bandwidth prices today, it's "if you're serious, you'll get your own servers".
With bandwidth prices as low as they are these days, there is no reason anyone (who knows how to run a site and has multiple domains) should be with a web host.
I *am* a web host - and I'm still saying this. Get your own servers, take control, pay less money. It's worth it.
