WASHINGTON - The nation's rocky economy sent 1.4 million more people into poverty last year, a Census Bureau (news - web sites) survey found. Nearly half of the newly impoverished were children.

Roughly 17.2 percent of children, or 12.2 million, lived in poverty in 2002, up from 16.4 percent, or over 11.5 million, in 2001, according to the American Community Survey results released Wednesday.

Overall, 12.4 percent of the population, or nearly 34.8 million people, lived in poverty in 2002, up from 12.1 percent, or 33.4 million, the previous year.

That sucks. A lot of it tho is down to bad choices. A lesson here:

Always pay attention in class. Make good choices. If all else fails do some galleries and make money. Apparently its that easy!

I love "poverty" its such an arbitrary definition.

The us poverty line for a single person under age 65 was $9359/year.

If we assume that http://www.globalrichlist.com/ (which someone posted yesterday) is at all accurate, someone at the US poverty line is still in the among the riches 12.26% of the worlds population.

Thanks George! We appreciate how you have helped our economy.

Jobs are abundant, anyone who wants work can find it at McDonalds. But if you work at McDonalds you have the choice of paying rent for substandard accomidations or eating or paying or medical care.

Maybe you think we all can work killing wildlife at ANWAR so you can justify drilling for oil in a wildlife reserve. Or better we can all join the new Iraqi police force.

I would agree with you if money were not passed from generation to generation and if being born into a poor family did not incur a disadvantage for life.

As it is, we have made something intrinsically worthless and external to ourselves so important as to bury the principle of "survival of the fittest".

I was shocked when I got to L.A. in '99 and a pal showed me an area where about 30,000 people lived homeless. It's like a small city!

Now the number is over 40,000. I figure it's because of the warm weather here and places to get cheap work that keeps em' here.

NY used to be that bad but Guliani kicked all the homeless out. Guess they came to L.A.

Woohoo!!! Jayeff in da' house!!! Those figures are alarming Jayeff. If only 5% earn more than $100k per year that's bad news. I've heard 'Rush windbag Limbaugh' quote that figure and how that upper crust pays the majority of taxes.

I'll tell ya, I've had young guys/gals just outta college with debts up the wazoo. Colleges don't teach shit nowadays and if they do the jobs are now being outsourced to third world countries!

Gadzooks if a young person with a $50k to $100k student loans thingie gets outta school and can't get work. Just recently an army of kids graduated from animation schools worldwide with hopes of working at Disney and Disney ends up firing it's hand drawn animation staff. Good thing me and the boys are on it and are finding jobs for these kids or they would be fucked!

Us guys in this pornmeister business have the best of both worlds. We can work from home, camper, even riding on a damned skateboard if we've got a uplink. We can move to 'bumfuck' Utah or someplace where mortgages are cheap, the air is clean and still bring in a great 5 figure or 6 figure income.

Stash that loot and reinvest it in ventures that are solid like certain real estate developement.

Getting rich in america is done by elbow grease and sharp wits. Being honorable with colleagues and knowing when to put the hammer down.

I'll check some figures too. They are constantly in need of upgrading here and there. The ever changing face of the economy is a rough one!

Can't say increased "poverty" whether "hypothetical" or not, is a surprise.

I have little doubt this is nothing is comparison to what has yet to come, both in the US and many other countries. (The "other counties" have been/are ignored since they are "non people" who live in "shit countries" according the "civilization".)

When the US debt increases to 750 and 1000 billion (wait for it!), a good few million jobs are lost to outsourcing and the "real" facts about the US economy are more generally known and accepted, (as in the most extensive US Treasury report ever - published in the spring and hidden since) - there are going to be some "stunned" folks around.

By the way, that Treasury Report equated the national debt as a percentage of all household contents in the US.. the total was $44200 trillion and that represented 90+% of all household assets in the US. Now it is doubtful there is an asset left in US home contents - more like a deficit - possibly 105% owed to other nations.

The sooner there is *any* monitory policy in the US government and some decent capable management the better. This shit is so out of control it's gonna cause severe hardship in the US with a ripple effect on others, - many of whom are already suffering real poverty, - the likes of which most of us on this board will never know.
