I killed a rattlesnake last night.

09-03-2003, 04:17 PM

I had run down to the Circle K to get some milk.

It was dark, and as I pulled back in my driveway and got out, I heard what I thought was sprinklers on in the back yard.

Well, since I have no sprinklers in the back yard, It finally dawned on me what I was hearing.

It was so dark, that I didn't know how close to the rattler I actualy was.

I slowly backed away and went in through the house and turned on the backyard lights.

My cat was sitting right beside the damn thing just watching it!

Got the cat away and killed the snake, went inside and had a beer.

That was my excitement for the evening.

I would have just moved it to somewhere safe from people, but I didn't have the proper tools for capturing it and I'm not going to just let it roam the nighborhood, being a threat to everyone. Sorry.

haha I am in the desert... people who live here and in AZ we know snakes.... az has like 5000 snakes per square mile...... I have caught me many of rattlers.... no need to kill it.... it won't hurt you unless you back in into a corner and agravate it..... leave it alone... catch it with a stick and your hands..... then.... take it out to the woods or desert... and let it go.... snakes rule... they do rid of varmit....

yeah snakes are pretty cool i used to own a red tailed boa and a ball python but had to get rid of them when we had kids beacuse they always got out of their cages. The snakes were huge and my wife was always afraid of them getting out and hurting one of the kids.

At my house in LA we had everything. Rattlers, scorpions, tarantulas.

This one rattlesnake kept coming back to sun himself on my driveway near the fence where my dogs where. 3 times I was nice and moved him back with a long pole.

So I worried he'd get to the dogs after the 3rd time he came back and I ran over the little prick. Had to drive over him 3 times. Hated doing that, but he was a big one.

I picked him up and tossed him down the hill. Couple days later I see these mexicans where they were doing construction work cutting up the dead rattler. I yell down what the hell you guys gonna do with that thing its been there a couple days. They said back in Spanish "Cocinar la sopa de la serpiente" . They were cooking snake soup.

I completely agree. I didn't have a stick that was forked properly for catching it though, and it was on concrete. I also had animals around I was worried about. Like that stupid cat of mine.

I sure wish I had of take a pic before hand though. It really wasn't a big guy either. Only about 3 1/2 foot long. Still, even with the yard light on, it was still very dark and I couldn't see it well enough to feel comfortable. The cat had already made it nervous and ready to strike.

I just thought those here that have never dealt with anything like this might be interested.

I know if you have enoughh cats around snakes won't come near. I also heard a rumour one time that cat's were immuned to rattlesnake venom. I doubt that's true, but I wonder...
