Miami-Dade's foreign-born residents account for 51.4 percent of its population of 2.3-million. That tops counties in larger metro areas, such as Queens and Kings counties in New York, and San Francisco and Los Angeles counties in California.

In Florida, Miami-Dade has by far the largest portion of foreign-born residents. Neighboring Broward County ranks second among major counties in Florida and 17th nationally with 27.7 percent.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of U.S. residents born in other countries rose to an estimated 33 million in 2002 and accounted for nearly half of the nation's population growth, according to a U.S. Census Bureau survey released on Wednesday.




Among states, California ranked first in the proportion of its population who were foreign-born with 26.9 percent, while Mississippi had the lowest percentage at 1.1 percent, the survey revealed.

The proportion of foreign-born in the city of Miami, 60.6 percent, was found to be greater than any other city in the United States.

The survey also found that a majority of the foreign-born live in four states: California (28 percent), New York (11.8 percent), Texas (9.8 percent) and Florida (8.9 percent).

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey showed that last year alone, the nation's foreign-born population grew by 1.6 million people. The total United States population an estimated 288.3 million people in 2002.

I'm not sure if u're being sarcastic here. How would police not see the illegal immigrants if a regular citizen can. They ignore the issue, as they are ordered to. The whole thing is a government plan for feeding the economy with cheap labor on no-brainer jobs. This works out great on many aspects, and is not the root for the unemployment at all. They want american people to work on professional jobs, because thats the future. It requires education, and to get their lazy ass off the ground. No-brainer jobs will be done by more and more machines and robots in the future, which will replace the illegal immigrants and save the country from a much bigger unemployment problem.
Imagine what people do if it was easy to make money by cleaning toilets? They wouldn't feel the need for education, they would have the option to quit school and earn money immediately. The effects would reflect to the following generations they raise. More stupid citizens, just what we need. And by the time machines start doing these jobs, US won't be able to get ahead game because of the unemployment problems and people's rejection for human replacement robots.

I can go on forever about this. Believe me, the government has put a lot of thought about this, and the illegal immigrants are working out much better than the alternatives.

California is supposed to have an open border with Mexico, was part of the deal when we stole it after all. Besides that unless you happen to personally be a native american, or someone that went through the proper channels to become a citizen in the last 30 years or so, you have no real right to complain.

Next the all do jobs that citizens just will not do. When you can actually imagine 2000 white kids bent over every day in the fucking hot sun working 12-16 hour days with no paid breaks, getting paid not per hour but per bushel or flat 7 days a week, only to find out at the end of the day or week they made less than minimum wage or hell even say they did make minimum wage, think white kids or even some citizen is gunna take that job? Oh yeah that is just one field.

Pay em more you say? Shit people throw a fucking fit if gas goes over 2.00 a gallon, hell we in California are attempting to toss out a person who actually was voted in cause some prices rose. Will you be ok when a head of letuce costs you 6.00, or tomatos are 12.00 a pound, or your favorite napa wine is now 90.00 a bottle for the cheap shit, hell maybe you would like to see your BK whopper go from 2.00 to 6.00 cause it has lettuce and tomato, or maybe your favorite resturaunt raising prices 200-500%.

Oh yeah your contractors on that new house your building or buying, hmm they use lots of day labor for stuff they can not hire citizens for. So expect a good jump in all those prices as well.

Licenses, well could the license also state they are Mexican and not US citizens, yes it could. Yet lets forget that as well, since if you ask any Mexican or go near where lots of them land you will find countless people who you can pay a small sum of money for and they hand you a Social Security Card that is valid. You then can walk into any DMV and get a license anyways. Mexicans already know this and do this every single friggen day.

Personally just thinking and without checking I am sure this bill was brought up to be signed just to hurt Davis as it is a loose loose deal. I knew there was a reason the Republicans now have mandatory spanish classes for their candidates.

(2003-08-06) Before 9/11, President Bush was intent on negotiating an amnesty deal with Mexican President Vicente Fox. Hoping to ingratiate himself with Latino voters, Bush urged compassion toward our neighbors to the south.

Fox too had a strong interest in amnesty. Illegal aliens in the United States send billions of dollars in much-needed revenue back to Mexico each year. In fact, these remittances, which Fox is determined to protect, are Mexico's second-largest source of income, behind oil exports. But, in the wake of the terrorist attacks, the American public's enthusiasm for amnesty waned.


Still, neither Bush nor Fox has given up on amnesty. Instead, they have been forced to seek other means, less visible to the public.


The most powerful alternative that has emerged is the matricula consular (literally "consular registration"), an identification card issued by the Mexican government to its citizens abroad. There has been a largely unnoticed, albeit well- orchestrated, campaign to achieve amnesty or quasi- amnesty through this otherwise seemingly innocent card.


All 47 Mexican consulates in the United States have been aggressively issuing the matriculas to its citizens regardless of their immigration status. The Mexican Foreign Ministry announced that more than a million cards were issued in 2002.


Mexican officials have lobbied for state and local governments, as well as private financial institutions, to accept the cards as official identification. In California, that campaign has been successful. The card is already recognized by many counties, cities and law enforcement agencies. The state Assembly recently passed two bills that together require all cities, counties and state agencies to accept the matricula. Their passage is virtually certain in the Democratic-dominated Senate.


Essentially, what this means is that California no longer cares to make a distinction between legal and illegal immigrants.


Clearly, no Mexican citizen who is legally in the United States needs such identification because he would possess either a visa or a green card. By providing official identification to illegal aliens, the Mexican government hopes to make their stay in the United States more secure. Illegal aliens who carry the matricula are far less likely to be arrested and deported than those with no papers at all. Not having an ID is often the reason illegal aliens are detained when stopped; the card can prevent encounters with police from escalating into arrests.


The card also makes it easier to open bank accounts, access social services and generally become more integrated members of local communities.


Many, including the FBI and some members of Congress, have expressed major concerns about the security of the matricula.


The card itself can easily be obtained with fraudulent documents. The Mexican government has no centralized electronic database for verifying the identity of the applicants. Only a birth certificate and one other form of identification are required, and these are authenticated visually by officials at the consulates, who have little incentive to question these documents.


It is well known that Mexico has a flourishing market in fraudulent documents; thus there is little reason to trust the method of granting matriculas.

In all sincerity. I'm well aware of the problems leading to the quagmire of illegal immigration.

I've got tons of relatives from central and s. america. Actually one of my aunts as well as my mom were with Ceasar Chavez back in the day during the migrant workers fights. I actually got my job in journalism straight outta high school because of a report I did exposing the harsh conditions the migrants and illegal immigrants endured under our own government and industries.

My points here outside of the rants, jokes, pseudo-sarcasm is simple.

This entire scenario of illegal immigration is due to the criminal undermining of the global population. Both within and without the U.S. borders. The sheer magnitude of the event is evident of the lack of ethics within our own government and the foreign governments from whence these people emigrate. It's a blatant disregard to human decency and integrity and is a matter of national security that we all got a wake up call during the 911 tragedies.

The resolution is too difficult because it means facing the fact that this problem has gone neglected by the world at large because it's too easy to take advantage of your fellow human being instead of offering a helping hand in educating and defending against the injustices that spur these hazardous excursions.

It's a matter of global importance that we all crack down on the twisted and evil governments and institutions that foster the conditions that lead to peoples having to flee their homelands for safe haven.

We're all guilty to some degree but at least we have forums like this to vent steam and enlighten one another with information.

I work for a group that fights human bondage/slavery and the figures are staggering to say the least. If you thought the old trans-atlantic slave trade was something wherein tens of millions of Africans, East Indians, Europeans, ( yes Europeans and Eurasians are where the word 'slavery' comes from. A word from 'slavic' when those people were enslaved by arab warlords) you should see the volume of slavery today. In ONE year more people worldwide are in some form of indentured servitude than in all the 500 years previous. It's worse in countries where we can't get to like Africa, Asia, S. America.

Europe is just as perilous as tens of thousands are extorted into some form of servitude wherein personal injury or economic oppression is held over their heads. We won't even get into the baltic or Russia.

You'ld think after 10 million years of evolution, fighting mosquitoes, giant bears, saber tooth cats, wolves etc. that in this day and age of microchip technology that our rise to the top of the food chain would end up with us as our own main course.

Several years ago a childhood pal of mine who's a cop, found an illegal immigrant who'd been hit by a hit and run driver and was killed.

The dude had no money and no one could pay for his body to be returned to Mexico. My pal got us all together and we forked over money and he personally took the guy's body back to his family and gave them money.

What did he get for all his trouble????

You should see the bodies of men, women, children that either wash ashore or the coast guard has to pick up. this guy i used to work with was a crackhead and used to live in san diego. he said he used to do the same thing except he had some big ass car with a secret compartment under the hood they would hide in. he said he did it a ton of times and made like $500 per person to sneak them across before he got caught. he only went to jail for like 2 weeks and was treated like a hero while he was in jail because all the mexicans in jail knew of him as a smuggler. if you ask me i think they need to be more strict.
