In Defense of Animals run by veterinarian Dr. Elliot Katz is the best organization I've come across. He's so dedicated to animal welfare. Sends informative literature, how the money is spent, etc. They accomplish a lot of good things.

Here's where your meat comes from:
Pigs and cows are kept in tiny cages in which they can't even turn around. They are force-fed until they can't even stand anymore (part of their diet consists of meat leftovers and ground bones from their own species, btw), and given antibiotics constantly to speed up growth and keep them alive (their diet and way of life cause all sorts of infections and other health problems).
Then, they are transported to "death factories", where the beast is transformed into the burger. Ofcourse, they don't go in willingly - after all, they can smell their dead cousins - and struggle as much as they can. Brute force is used to get them in anyway.
After that, a steel pin is rammed through their heads and they are electrocuted. Then, they're cut into little pieces which will end up on your plate.
There really is no way to do this as "humanely" as possible. Just deal with it./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

Ever been to one of those? I have, they had 200,000 pigs there, in four huge barns on an area about as large as what a "traditional" farmer would need for a few hundred pigs or cows.
The thing is, the majority of farm animals are kept that way, and most meat is produced that way. Not because there are more farmers who work that way, but because the ones that do have a production hundreds of times bigger than that of the normal farmers.
Some stats for my small country (Holland - 16 million inhabitants): 14 million pigs are kept, 85 million chickens are kept, and 4,3 million cows. Yearly, 500 million animals are "processed" (chickens are raised in 6 weeks, then slaughtered, pigs are raised in a few months).
The bulk of this (90% I believe) happens in factory farms, even though traditional farmers greatly outnumber factory farmers./(bb|[^b]{2})/Comment

Im sure we can all agree that to keep up with the demand, these large farms have to exist. Do you think KFC could keep up with the demand for chicken if they ran a place where they were "nice" to the animals?
At best all we can hope for is they have a pain free life. But I agree with KRL. There is no reason to beat an animal and leave it for 3 days or for that matter watch the thing in pain for 5 minutes after you shoot it with the bolt gun. Also I don't understand why they leave the sick ones just to die on their own? If they are truley sick like most of the ones we saw in the video why not just kill them when you find out they are sick instead of making them suffer without food or water. The same goes for the runts of the pack that seem to get abused because of their size.
This brings up my next question. Why can't these large farms set up a program where they give away the small or sick animals. Im sure there would be alot of smaller farms that would take these animals. Or at least for the small ones someone who would want them as a pet.
This type of stuff will never stop but believe that something has to be done to stop the abuse that animals suffer. Just like what those people in China were doing to those dogs.. posted last week on gfy.
