IE Toolbars, is this possible, programmers? and what will it cost?

    What I need:
Basically an IE toolbar with a lot of dropdown menus that can update the content in the dropdown menus based on a database or whatever the hell it needs to use. I will need a backend for this also to update the toolbar from a webpage with whatever I put in it. I'll get into more details in the e-mail if you have the skills...give me a price quote range also.

            Anyone done one in VB?

I can create BHO's and have seen plenty of C++ toolbank code
but can't find much on VB being able to create them.

            Anyone know the score?

i have such a thing, first i thought this was great, but hell, it slowed down everything, even in beta where just a few users were using it. my advice is:
get a very clean a fast toolbar, dont overload it!

you DONT want it done in VB. go wtih delphi or c++

and a lot of people can code it, but make them show you a completed project of equal or great c++/delphi ability before you start shelling out cash or even wasting your time waiting for the project to be completed.

be willing to pay more for good code too, its worth it. good code shouldnt slow down the browser, or anything like that, as someone mentioned. speically just a toolbar that essentially just sits there, maybe it will slow down a bit while it updates itself.

You can do it in VB, but it's actually a lot easier to do it in VC++. Some of the features just aren't there to make it as robust in VB without a bunch of API calls.

I'd make an XML service backend on the web server side, and have the toolbar read that. Not a big deal at all.

BTW, I've made them in both languages before based on an XML web service like I talked about.

Edit: Here's a link that might help: http://www.mvps.org/emorcillo/cod/shell.htm

But like Why said above, I'd stick to VC++....it's a much better bet.

it's a proven fact that vb sucks. there are VB decompilers so don't bother to make anything useful, in a month you'll see every moron playing with your work...

Thanx a bunch Fletcher. Some good code on that page, could do
with a little more documentation but looks good so far.

I'd guess that the people talking about slowness were using
their BHO's to send surfing details back to a central server. If it's
coded correctly no matter what language the toolbar should run
on very little CPU. If they are posting info back to their server
then this could have become a flood of data quite quickly and if
posted with poor code could have held up the client as well as
                          the server.

VB is a fine language for what it's designed for which from where
I stand is Rapid Application Development. I'm not here to defend
any language but I'd have to guess that flashfreak has not used
many. It's easy to say "proven fact VB sucks" but it's harder to
not sound like a moron when saying such a broad unsupported
                          statement ;-)

btw my VB interface-less BHO's work quite well with very little
                          resources being used.

It's a given that C++ in the vast majority of situations is going to
be faster, it quite simply is a lower level programming language
with much faster access to the resources it needs. So I guess
C++ being faster means that "it's a proven fact VB sucks". If I
thought like that I'd be poor. How did this turn into a language
                          debate...

Thanx for the info again.... I'm sure toolbands in VB will be quite
easy once I have a method worked out. I'll move onto C++ after
giving VB a decent crack at it.

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

Also you can load it into a disassembler and convert it to assembly and work backwards that way.

Sure anyone that knows ASM can do almost anything.

The danger is more kiddies being able to download a working
decompiler that actually gets the orginal VB code.

The .NET decompiler does look interesting...
                                      Good thing I don't use .NET :-)

Checked through the VB code from Emorcillo and it looks to be
pretty robust rather then just a hack. I'll have to test that his
OLELib works on different configurations but should be fine. Given
the C++ code is more straightforward but this VB seems to
contain all the same functionality without being too long-winded.

For those playing with it checkout the ExplorerBands example.
