I like the mk4 more than 5 too, but it's far from ugly.
Besides, I'm sure that golf5 will be a hit just like all the older versions, they simply have their (wide) customer base. And from reading on vwvortex, looks like the 5 is a sporty car (new engine).
I agree with you about mazda6, great car for the money..

I liked the old golf 4 better.

All of the new generation cars look the same, except for Renault megane 2 which is a tad different.

Toyota Corolla also looks fat, short, and ugly, also cheap.

From this and last year's releases I like the Mazda 6 and Renault megane 2 the best.

Also I think the new Opel Astra looks promising.
