I've done some wardriving myself, quite fun actually and indeed there are a LOT of wireless networks out there that are accessible just by scanning and connecting to them.
I've been doing this for fun with a buddy of mine, usually just for 10 or 15 minutes or so but usually we'd pick up a minimum of 5 networks that we actually can connect to, another dozen wich aren't secured through WEP encryption of any kind.
The TGP thing makes sense though
