If you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who has died for our sins you are saved.
(very short summary)
I think the part you mean is Revelation, and yes it's very ugly what will happen to this world, that's why I will not be around by that time. Actually there is a very good book about it called "the end of times" written by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim De LaHay... if you want I can send you a copy.
