Best way to compress a .avi movie?

Any free programs or programs built in XP that I can use to compress the file size for AVI movies. I have like a 25 minute movie and the size it around 250MB.

I'm not a movie expert, so talk dumb to me.

    Thanka

what are you trying to do exactly?
the only avi codecs that actually compress size wise would be
    divx and xvid

or else turn em into mpgs and be done with it

The only ones that will do that would be bought ones, canopus procoder or sorenson squeeze and you can convert them to wmv. You would be able to then squeeze the shit out of them.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

If you want to make small mpeg files for MGP galleries, you should use Virtualdub to split the movies and TMPGEnc to compress them.

unless something has changed over the years, VDub will give you avi files, not mpg

Use Virtualdub. It has a bunch of different codecs. Best way to drop file size is to get rid of stereo sound and to down sample to 22 Khz.
