    XP Tech Help Needed

If someone is feeling helpful ;)

XP Pro running like a bag of shit... running slow in other words. Hard Drive also sounds unusually busy.

Browsing speed is very slow and I'm on Broadband. Lots of images on GFY are showing as broken, and when pulling sites out my favourites, a lot of them are coming up 404 and I'm having to hit refresh 3-4 times... including on GFY to get them to come up. IE is also taking a long time to respond, sometimes hanging for a few seconds. E-mail is also slow...

I've got all XP/IE updates and critical fixes.
I've run a virus check, with the latest update... sod all found.
I've cleared temp directories, history and cache.
    I've cleared system restore points.
I've run HiJack This, SpyBot S&D and also SpySweeper to get rid of nasties... nothing major found.
I'm running Sygate Personal Firewall and it's showing I'm getting hit with these:-

ICMP scans/pings On Port 8 at rate of about 10 per minute. The attacks appear to come from users on my ISP, probably spoofed or scanned. Richard from Realm has already mentioned the Welchia Worm... I've run the scan and I'm showing clean. Could this shit be slowing me down? This has been going on two days now and it's started to piss me off now..

Thanks to anyone who offers a fix which doesn't involve formatting or changing OS ;)

I know one of them damn MS service pack things slowed the fuck outta my XP system, I tried to uninstall it and XP died and I did a re-install. I got SP1 and the blaster worm patch and that's all and it runs good again.

Sorry I don't remember which service pack it was.

That would be cool mate, if I knew what I was looking for ;) Virus checkers and spy software is not finding anything... so the changes of me finding it when I don't know where I'm looking is pretty slim, but could get lucky

Move Windows 2000 pro, there is a good reason why it still sells real well with IT people.

              check connection: http://www.dslreports.com/

check if any unwanted programs starting up: run msconfig

check hosts file for anything weird: system32/drivers/etc/HOSTS

                    Hi mate.

DSL report came back fine :/

                    Ran MSCONFIG, nothing in StartUP.

                    Hosts file unchanged :/

                    Thanks;)

It's well strange... downloading is fine.. sites are taking a long time to respond and hang for a few seconds and then bang, they open. Don't know about all these broken images though

                        Sure bud.

                        AMD Athlon 850 I think...
                        350 Meg Memory
                        NVidia G/Force 2 64 meg

That's about it. no hardware changes or software installs. This has been happening for the last two days only and I'm trying to browse changes what have been made to the system either by lovely MicroFuckSoft or other

Just spoke to a guy I know who's using the same ISP (BT)... it looks like part of my problem is the ISP. The thousands of users who didn't patch their machines using my ISP are the ones being exploited and effecting everyone else with their 3 billion ping requests... it's dragging the ISP's network down.

                          Matto,
I've been running with service pack 1 fine suprisingly. It just slowed down a couple of days ago... but I think it was after I installed another Microsoft update which probably doesn't like something in my system. Thanks for that though..

Thanks all... looks like I have to put with this until my ISP can sort this or the worm expires.
