How would you detect users connection speed?
What i found so far?.
1) html page to ask user for high-band or low-band version, redirect to either page (each page should still have a link to switch)
2) reverse dns lookup and scan for words to indicate high-band, default to low-band (set lookup at 1 sec max, 80% of ip's take 1/10th of a sec)
DIAL-UP:
"dialup" (ex.: dialup-209.244.92.247.dial1.dallas1.level3.net)
"aol"
"ppp"
...
HI-SPEED:
"cable" (ex.: wc08.ym.rnc.net.cable.rogers.com)
"dsl" (ex.: mpy-77-035.adsl.reimari.net)
"home" (ex.: cp111494-a.roemd1.lb.nl.home.com)
...
"...and any IP starting by 24., since these seems to be owned only by cable
modems." Credits: google =)
3) stand-alone script which times the transmission of a file, redirects to high/low band based on the time in sec/micro-sec
4) (first time visitor, initial page) load the low-band version, on top of page start a java-script timer, onLoad if took under X amount of seconds: redirect to High-Band version of the same page... broadband users wont mind the redirect since its fast for them (at this point pass a variable speed=high with each link from page to page etc)
Any way you think of is pretty dirty.. just have to choose the best 1, of course it would be great if all browsers would just set the info...and scripts could pull it as an environment variable
