spews was adding your IPs in their blacklist whenever somone was sending a spam from an IP range close to yours. This way they were blackmailing the host and causing problems to clients that didn't have anything to do with the spam itself. Your IPs were staying there forever and it was near impossible to get them off their blacklist.Comment

they will probably have another lawsuit to.. yesturday they blocked every ip on the internet from sending mail.. *.*.*.* no mail at all was able to send almost all day yesturdayOriginally posted by Soul_Rebel
and from what i remember they still have a big lawsuit against them pending.Comment

you run a host that doesnt allow you to bulk mail, spam, nothing. I'm getting a server and start sending spam. Spews blacklists my ips and the ips close to me which belong to the same hosting company. The host would have kicked me anyhow. Now he and his clients would had to deal with the clown behind spews that was pretending god on every opportunity he had. Me the spammer wouldn't give a shit. I would move to the next host.

Blackmailing the hosts is a good thing. In the old days the hosts could give a shit. Nowadays, all the spam filters block by at least an IP which could take out 50 or more innocent virtual domains.Originally posted by Soul_Rebel

That is good, because isp's have scrambled to adopt the new reality, and keep spammer scum hopping from host to host daily.
Blacklisting has helped the Internet greatly. With spampal about 90% of my spam goes in the deleted folder where it belongs. If you are stupid enough to host with someone who is slow to kick off spammers, well, I didn't get your email and probably don't want to.
SPEWS will be missed, but lots of other good ones survive.
All spammers must die.

So where is the logic there?
you dont want to get email from your mother because her isp has connectivity from the same upstream provider who has another colo facility who was slow to boot a spammer?
your logic isnt even worth arguing with... it's no different than banning the entire 818 area code because one person from that area code keeps telemarketing you.
all the calls originate from a single phone number but your telephone provider decides to block the entire area code without letting you know about it even.
if the provider for the 818 area code is breaking laws and helping the telemarket then your phone company should sue them and force them to stop supporting that person... if they arent then your provider can eat shit and die or lobby for a new law.
if you dont like getting calls at all.. unplug the telephone.
if you just dont like getting calls from people you dont know... then you should do like every other normal person does and get caller id you whiny motherfucker.
accordingly, if you dont like getting email, then stop checking your email. if you dont like getting email from people you dont know, then make a white list or subscribe to a service like spam arrest.<a href="http://www.adultplatinum.com/"><img src="http://www.adult.com/wmbanners/10dcash-468x60.gif"></a>Comment

It isn't a whole colo facility. 99% of the time, its a single IP address because virtual servers are involved.
So yea, lets say dear old mom has her cooking site on a virtual server. A spammer gets in and she gets listed in the blacklist along with 79 other innocent people.
That sucks, so mom moves to another isp who is a bit more reactive, doesn't tolerate open relays and proxies, etc., and monitors new accounts.
Thats been what has been happening lately, and its a good thing.
Its the *only* thing that prevents my inbox from being clogged, I get faithfully about 200-400 spams a day that are removed and put in a deleted folder because of blacklist orgs.
I scan that folder when I get time, and yeah, occasionally mistakes are made. CCBill was blacklisted for a week. Most of those organizations work off velocity and free up the IP when the spam stops, and CCBill was delisted.
If you have a better working idea that can be implemented today, is cheap and 95% effective, fine, post it.I have no signatureComment

the thing is bro, virtually no spammers use a virtual host.... and now that all these people are using proxies there is pretty much no way to block mail.
a whitelist is the only way.... that.. or at least a provider who uses the blocklist but tags it as spam ala spam assassin....
the only thing that pisses me off is when providers bounce mail or just dont deliver it... and then dont notify the user that they are bouncing mails.<a href="http://www.adultplatinum.com/"><img src="http://www.adult.com/wmbanners/10dcash-468x60.gif"></a>Comment

If spam bothers you guys so much, why don't you use a good Bayesian filter?
Once it's trained, it does not matter where the spam comes form, you'll never see it. The false positives are virtually non-existent too, so you dont have to worry about missing important business communications.
I recommend http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/ it brings back the pleasure of e-mail.----------

A whitelist is no good. I run multiple businesses and we *want* to hear from our customers, and I sure as hell aren't going to make them reply to an email before I read theirs.
All I know is what works for me. SpamPal doesn't delete the spam, but tags it so Outlook can move it into a folder for review. In the few months I have been using that, I would say I have seen maybe 2 or 3 emails out of many thousands of spams that were false positives.
We filter on about 10 blacklists, and I am saving many thousands of dollars because my employees don't have to spend as much time deleting spam.
Until a secure mail solution (maybe something with certificates or something) becomes standard, blacklists will be widespread.
Its not about spam "bothering me" its about MONEY and I refuse to waste more than a couple minutes a day dealing with the dumb idiots sending them who will all thankfully be going back to burger flipping within about 5 years.I have no signatureComment

This is such fucking good news. I don't spam and I hate the spam I receive, but these guys stank to high heaven. Banning by block, stupid.
Using innocent webmasters as a kind of blackmail to get rid of spammers was/is just about the most stupid policy ever. It's not like there are no other more professional blacklists available.
I will gladly suffer a tad more spam for a week or so until the lazy dumbass ISP's who used these jerks get a clue and install professional solutions.
My forums, which have never, ever spammed, and are on no blacklists apart from spews will be able to send certain emails again. My members are happy. Fucking A. what sucks about spews was their shit attitude and refusal to remove an IP address or range, even tho the offender was removed or the problem corrected.
We caught a formmail.pl that was exploited, shut it off and deleted the remaining unsent mails about 30 mins into the sendout and still had /22 blacklisted. Couldnt get it removed for nearly a fucking year.
From an exploited formmail.pl script uploaded by a newb client.
Hell, we got an IP range and found out the whole B block was blacklisted from nearly 2 years back and couldnt get it delisted.
A blacklist run by intelligent adults could be useful. Spews was run by the "burger flippers" you refer to above - except they had a worse attitude then your average burger flipper. Hell, I am halfway inclined to believe Spews is run by a group of spammers....Comment

The guys running Cash69, who started this post are BIG TIME scammers, spammers and liars. They are suspected to be involved in criminal activity such as theft and hijacking of AOL accounts to name just one. Like most bottom feeding spammers, they don't like SPEWS.
Osirusoft , is a distributor of multiple blocklists, of which SPEWS is one. Osirusoft may be going down, but SPEWS is distributed by multiple sources, which will pick up the slack. There is no real connection between Osirusoft and SPEWS. It is incorrect and stupid to say that SPEWS is going away. Re-read the SlashDot article and comprehend.
What should be clear is that all the recent DDOS attacks by the spamming turdlets against SPEWS, Spamcop, and Osirusoft
prove that the spambags are being hit in the pocketbook where it hurts.
In closing..... to all spammers.."ROT IN SPEWS". Enjoy your intranet.

The SPEWS blacklist did very little to stop spam. Blocking open
relays only stops the most basic of script kiddy spam. When
running an ISP we had a run in with them and I can tell you now
that they are much like extortionists when dealing with legitimate
ISP businesses. They are self appointed police and act
accordingly with no respect or understanding of the problems
faced by those trying to work with them.
I'm no spammer but I know one thing for sure. SPEWS being
dead is a good thing for everyone.
Maybe now people won't have so much trouble with their
legitimate business email being blocked.
If we are to have spam police I'd much rather they weren't a
bunch of elitist academic egotistical scum.
To those that think SPEWS was a spam saviour fighting for our
rights. I'd just like to say you chose the wrong organisation to
support. They aren't as valiant and ethical as you might have
thought.
Today is a day for everyone to celebrate the world getting rid of
another bunch of morons. The world just lost another moron.
Hurray!

After trying 5 different hosts, I found the best.

Unfortunately, SPEWS was often an unwitting accomplice in the Joe Job and Complaint Game. Did more harm than good in the long run. Just another example of good intentions gone astray.<CENTER><A HREF="http://www.hot-off-bourbon.com/" target="_blank"><IMG SRC="http://www.hot-off-bourbon.com/images/hob-logosmall.jpg" border="0"></A>

Spews are a bunch of Russian tossers with no regard for hosts. I once wrote that in an email when they forced us to switch IPs, claiming the block we were on was stolen (it was taken from a 'friend' who went bust)! And this line got us a cancel from a lady thinking I had a beef with Russians (I was born in Russia myself)!
I couldn't care less about them. Spews got way to powerful because of all these ignorant people thinking they were actually useful. Yeah right, for the owners ego maybe.
