Earthquake Rattles West-Central N.J.
MILFORD, N.J. - An earthquake rattled a rural area in west-central New Jersey on Tuesday, shaking buildings and knocking small objects about. There were no reports of injuries or serious damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado said the magnitude-3.8 quake hit at 2:24 p.m. and was centered about eight miles south of Milford in Hunterdon County.
"At the top of the Milford hill, it felt like an explosion," said Emergency Management Coordinator Henry Schepens. "In town it felt more like a shaking."
Milford town clerk Nora Lei said she was fielding calls from residents who reported plates falling from shelves and curtains being knocked down.
Some residents reported a sonic boom-like sound, and thought there had been an explosion at the local paper mill, Schepens said.
No damage was reported in the neighboring town of Holland Township, but residents were rattled. "Our whole building bounced," Police Chief Steve Verish said.
According to the geological survey, earthquakes occur less frequently on the East Coast than the West Coast, but small quakes happen here about every two to three years. Moderately damaging ones happen roughly twice a century, according to the survey's Web site.
