Mainstream programmers are a bunch of scam artists in my opinion.. Perhaps it is just getting used to fair priced porn programmers that has me spoiled.. But paying 80-90.00/hour for a programmer just doesn't seem right Now when there is a genius in India that will do it for a Fraction of that Or even a genius in Indiana that doesn't have a 6 year masters in Computer Science..

My lawyer charges me $190.00 an hour.
My accountant charges me $150.00 an hour.

Don't be so cheap.

Either you are going to find a low hourly rate and may take some time to complete (Double Hours) and it may come out all screwed up or they will require a decent pay rate and will kickass on projects.

A genius in india.. please.. the geniuses in india don't work for $10 an hour, no matter what the press says. All of the exceptional indian programmers are in america or other countries making fiar wages.. The programmers you get are what's left. The unambitious, the cannon fodder. I use some overseas programming myself.. Not to do any real work.. just stupid shit.. html design, perl scripting. TYhey're good at what they do.. they're not good programmers, they're good at churning out marginal web code. I'd trust them tio implement a very well documented algorithm, and maybe a protocol.. I'd never trust any of them to write one.


I used to work with an Oracle DBA, when I worked at Napster. We paid him $300 an hour for consulting work, and to be honest, he was under paid. We had one box running oracle personal edition for linux, a dual p3 with 4 gigs of memory (remember how slow memory was back then?) . It had 20 disk drives and an icp vortex controller.. We peaked at 1600 logins per SECOND. Show me a $10 an hour dba living in a tin shack who can do that.

plain and simple, a good programmer is agood programmer. Good programmers are worth money, no matter how bad the economy is. Personally I regularly turn down job offers of $130-$150k (regularly being about once a month) because I'm more focused on my own cconsulting business, hosting business & adult sites.

In the end, you get what you pay for.

Postgres is great. It's like oracle, but without the $60k price tag. One of my customer's db servers that I run for him has a combined 6 million records of rather detailed (20k per entry) voter files (they're in the political campaign market).. when they do queries, they do serious queries, not "select $user from users where ($last_login <= $(date-40); but ridiculously complicated joins.. and it runs on a dual xeon with 2 gigs of 533mhz memory and 6 disks in a raid 10 config.. It's nominal hardware comparitevly.. Plain and simple, MySQL couldn't do it.. It doesn't have the power or the features.. Mysql is just a very well hacked up berkeley db imho.

And if you want full feature compliance, go with SAP's free DB or the free Ingres DB .. or a pirated copy of Oracle.. but mysql.. bah.

ACID compliance is good. Postgresql is free and super easy to use. And has postgis.

It would be nice if it handled blobs better.

I'm really starting to like plpgsql .. i'm building a custom isp management app in php and am putting more and more of it directly in postgres.. eventually postgres will be an appserver just like oracle.

Mysql does nothing postgres can't do.. and Postgres does MANY things that MySQL can't do.. Mysql is what, 6 years old? Postgres is based off of a 16 year old codebase.. it's very well written. Bruce Momjian is an analytical motherfucker.. MySQL is a mess, have you ever looked at the code? Too many cooks in the kitchen.. First they merged with InnoDB, now they're merging with SAP db .. what's next, a merge with SQLserver?
