I am not saying either is right, however I do feel the death penalty may be a little stiff
I don't know...
I'm sure many of the kids will work through what happened...
But what about those that don't work through it, those that in essence he stole their life... destroyed all that they were to become... killing them emotionally...
personally if I was one of those kids he fondled, I'd sleep much easier knowing he couldn't do it again to anyone

Well, since my involvement in this discussion really was centered on whether or not the state fucked up by letting him get killed, I will get back on topic and just say that MA does not have a death penalty. If I end up in their prison for any reason, I have a right to expectation that I will live thru it.
the point is not how he should be punished - the point is how can someone molest 130 kids before it's discovered? this was not an unknown stranger out of the dark woods - it was a person who could have been easily pointed at. that's the real failure of the system.

Just dont fight back when you drop the soap and youll probably live through it... might grab the hiv on your way out. Nothing's guarenteed in prison
I see a very interesting, yet alarming tendency in this thread, which can be summarized as follows:
Person: "Anyone who does something as bad as raping children deserves to die!!"
Crowd: "Yeah!!!"
Bystander: "But shouldn't the state carry out judgment and punishment?"
Person: "Not if you do something as bad as raping children!"
Crowd: "Yeah!!!"
Bystander: "Actually, he didn't rape them, he just fondled them."
Person: "It doesn't matter, wrong is wrong. So, he deserved to die!"
Crowd: "Yeah!!!"
conversation continued
Bystander: "So, if you do something wrong, you should be murdered, without any trial or whatsoever?"
Person: "Uhh... Yeah!!"
Crowd: "Yeah!!!"
Bystander: slowly moves away from the crowd, before he is labelled a witch and thrown onto one of the many smoking fires

The end of days is near!

So if you support vigilante justice what do you say about the religious right deciding to burn down adult videos stores. Or pro lifers shooting abortionists.

He was discovered but the church leaders dicided they were above the law and just moved him to another parish where he could continue. Another form of vigilante action?
If the law had of been respected and followed a lot of children would not of been molested. The church took on dealing with it.

Get the rope we going to have us a hangin.. Yeee Haaaaw!
the article I read said he was killed by someone who had a grudge against homosexuals. I'm not sure that is something to celebrate. Another article early on said the guy didn't know he was a priest but just knew he was gay.
I am not upset that he isn't around any more but not sure I want to celebrate someone being murdered.
Who was it that said that a civilsation is judged by how it treats its prisoners?
I always thought that part of our civilization was that people were send to jail AS punishment not FOR punishment.
Worse that all of that though - I think his killing will stop some people that were molested from coming forward. There are going to be pleanty of people that want to come forward but do not want to cause the death of a priest - regardless of what he did. Catholic guilt is a powerful thing.
torture him slowly for the rest of his life, and let the relatives of the abused children visit him each day as he's tied to the chair...................
You can get it ploughing a paddock, you can get it makin some porn sites, matter of fact I've got it now.
For a hard earned thrist, you need a big cold beer.
if he was found guilty of "fondling", his punishmen should be to be fondled. old school biblical justice says an eye for an eye, so the punishment should mirror the crime.
i don't think that our justice system should have its punishments carried out by convicted felons. it's bullshit that a person who is already serving his time should be vulnerable in this way. plenty of people feel that adult webmasters should be killed - but i, for one, wouldn't want to die in jail because a bunch of u.s. citizens feel it's okay for a prisoner to carry out their personal version of justice.
Mitchell Garabedian, a lawyer who represents more than 100 victims, said it was impossible to predict how the killing may affect these talks. But several criminal cases against Geoghan will now be closed, he said.
So it looks like Geoghans dead was stroke of luck for the church

everyone is aware of how brutal prison is... this should be a detterrant on what not to do to land your ass there...the priest just couldnt keep his hands off little alter boys.. he landed in prison..It was his choice .....he should have just bent over when he first arrived..bitched up and he probably would have been protected for a certain amount of time.
Maybe if the catholics werent so fucking evil and tried for many many many years to relocate and hide the preists hanious crimes against children..then maybe people wouldnt be so apt to kill the fuckers...
bottom line .. he is dead.. he is home..back with Satan
I have a cousin (not even 22) doing time for armed robbery.
He told me in a letter there is no way he will be able to do 5 years without killing someone in self defense in jail. he said he almost has to fight daily to keep his shit.
This is from a letter about 6 months ago.
So he goes in for robbery and has to kill someone to protect himself?
What a way to do your time.
He told me he will spend the rest of his life in prison before he lets someone ass fuck or bitch him.
It's not right to allow criminals to do this shit.
accroding to the article - which of course could be wrong - he wasn't killed by someone thinking he was doing justice for the kids. He was killed by someone who would have most likely had a go at killing anyone he thought was gay. Sorry, I am not going to celebrate that.
He was a bad man and rotting in jail would have not been a bad thing. However, championing a murderer is surely not morally just either?
I heard an interesting theory last night. Someone said the Catholic Church ordered the hit to avoid the cost of Litigation for his pending charges

My brother just last month completed a 5 year sentence for armed robbery, and was in the same prison where the priest was killed.
He was over last night, a little freaked out.

If he hadn't been an "armed" robber he probably wouldn't be serving his time in such a hostile environment, death extreme violence and suicide are common in prisons, he should have chosen his career more carefully.

Why not? All it is, is a theory. Certainly if you look historically at some of the actions of the Catholic Church, it's not a stretch to imagine they may have ordered the death of 1 man; a man, who had brought them an incredible amount of bad press and would have continued to be a money pit.
Also sends quite a message to any pedophile Priest out there wouldn't you say?
I'm not saying its right, its just a theory and it has its merrits.

I think child molesters should have their genitalia removed and be forced to do landscaping for schools under armed supervision!

mother fucker had it coming, molesting over 150 boys! and he only had a 10 year sentence? is this true? how fucked up is our system.
I have 2 boys and this shit outrages me and pisses me off. People like that should be skinned alive in public and every victim have a chance to pour salt on the basterd. That's what you call justice.

This is a quote from the article in the washington post
"Across the state, while few people outwardly mourned the passing of a man who sparked a scandal in the Roman Catholic Church and was alleged to have molested nearly 150 children -- mostly boys -- while a priest in a number of Boston-area parishes, the question was: How could this have happened? "
I think he got what he deserved. We are talking 3 decades of abuse. He didn't just oops do something wrong once. Not that, that would matter.
And armed robbery is a violent crime and if you commit armed robbery then yes, I think you should fear for your life in jail everyday just like your victim did when you were robbing them at gun or knife point!
Funny how when an armed robber is put in the place to fear for his life, he cries and whines about it. Or even worse thinks he wil have to kill someone to make sure nobody steals his shit?? What are they gonna steal lol. You reap what you sow

I'm marking this on the calendar. We're in agreement on something.
"Uh-uh, if it happened to your kid you would want him dead, too!" Sure I would, I would also want someone dead for beating up my girlfriend. So what?

he would of been killed eventually anyhow, if not now, in a year, 5 years..10 years. even in protective custody and he couldn't survive, he didn't stand a chance. just imagine if he had been in with the general population? the jail system is fucked up, you will be victimized if you are in the section where they put the 'violent' criminals. i'd like to see more dedication to rehabilitation rather than just locking ppl up, they only learn to become better criminals anyhow. as for child molestors tho, there is no cure. they have a sort of obsessive compulsive behavoir where they obsess about these thoughts until they carry them out. sentences for child molestors need to be harsher in my opinion, as the rate of molesters who reoffend is very very high. personally im just glad he will never have the chance to hurt another child again. did he deserve to die? such judgement isn't reserved for me to make.
you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day..
No that's not what I said at all, what I said was if you commit violent crimes or are prepared to commit violent crimes then you should expect to serve your sentence with similar criminals.

accused by 130, I believe he was convicted of 2. And yeah, 2 is 2 too many, but let me tell you a little story.
In 1983 there was a big scandal around here, that you may have heard of, the McMartin Pre-School. The owners of this well established pre-school were accused of all kinds of weird things, including child abuse, maiming and killing of small animals, you name it, they were accused of it.
I happened to have a close association with the mother of 2 of the kids that had been allegedly abused. I even became personally involved in the hysteria that followed. For a while.
The more I learned about what was happening, the more I knew this was pure bullshit. I assisted in getting a newspaper reporter fired from his job (in retrospect, he most likely had done nothing but befriended a woman in an attempt to get more info for his story), and even had an opportunity to attack Raymond Buckey as he stood in the hallway of the court, but luckily I restrained myself. Why luckily? Because he was innocent.
While I have no doubt that some of the accusations against some of the priests are true, I also have no doubt that a majority of the accusations are unfounded.
Mass hysteria is an amazing thing. I was an altar boy for many years. With the way the newspapers have told the story I should have been molested dozens of times.
Sure the Catholic Church is going to settle out of court on some of these accusations, they can't afford not to. The judicial system forces decisions to be made on a completely financial basis.
The point is, this guy was sentenced to 10 years, would have probably served 6. Instead he got the death penalty. You can murder someone in MA, shit, you can murder 130 people in MA and not get the death penalty.
