When I was young and single I used to live right across the river from the Mall, had a floor to ceiling window view of the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Capitol Building, and three bridges along the potomac.
It was fucking AWESOME on the 4th of July.
Now I live in a suburbia wasteland.

I live about 5 miles from there and like any city often forget its there. I love having company, because they always want to hit the Mall and it forces me to get down there. Drinks on top of the Hotel Washington is always a good call.

I love Washington. I guess that comes from being a political and news junkie. Everytime we went there on school trips, etc I couldn't sleep the night before the trip. I used to love being able to get forgien newspapers from vending machines on the street. Man, next trip home I am taking a diversion.
If I hadn't left the States for the UK, DC was one of three places I saw myself ending up.Comment

Just moved back to the States, it was a tough call where to go, especially after 9/11. I really find the locals to be informed and active participants in what's going on. I actually lived in Boston prior to being transferred to Montreal and it was so not what I thought it was going to be. I found the people to be very closed minded, which was shocking because we lived in Cambridge. My boyfriend at the time was doing a fellowship at Harvard and we met more racist people in the 12 months we were there than either one of us had in both our lifetimes combined. Yeah, I lived in Boston too right before going to the UK. I went to school there for a year. I like Cape Anne which is outside Boston - where Salem, Rockport and Gloucester are located. That is my dream place to live.Originally posted by toonces

Only time i go into d.c. is on the 4th, one hell of a gathering in front of the monument....fucking amazing fireworks

The traffic is not that bad as long as you avoid the beltway, and 66. Probobly best to stay off 95, and 395. 295 can be a hassle as well and best to stay off 50 heading to Annapolis Friday-Sunday. Well-ok, just take the metro your fine

a dirty crime ridden city full of people that don't comes out of their houses at night...live with bars on their windows.. work in stores with bullet proof glass
I never liked DC.. seemed everything was too candy coated and put there for a front..sorta like our government
I drove my kids all around DC..even they pointed out to me how everything around the white house area was really nice and the rest of the city was left to go to shit

The dirty crime ridden areas are not the majority. DC can be a very cosmopolitan city if you know where you are going. One of the problems with the layout of the city is the really bad neighborhodds are just steps from the mall and the white house.
