SoBig.F... get ready, today could be bad

    link

SOBIG.F VIRUS. Latest incarnation of a nasty program that spreads by e-mail. Once a user opens the infected file, Sobig scours the computer and sends scores of messages to any e-mail addresses it finds. Considered the fastest-spreading such virus, affecting nearly 6 percent of e-mail messages worldwide since Aug. 18

Hidden within the virus is an instruction to the infected machines to make contact at 3:00 p.m. ET with the 20 computers, which host an unidentified program.

Even if the mystery program is a harmless gag, the sheer volume of Internet data converging on the 20 computer targets could slow the Internet to a crawl.

PATCH UP guys, this would be a bumpy ride.

The worm de-activates on September 10, 2003. The last day on which the worm will spread is September 9, 2003.

you're right... my bad. I think they said it was the Blaster that took all that shit down. Something about shutting all the systems down every 60 seconds. Not even enough time to get a patch downloaded.

People think it won't happen to me and don't bother updating.

Many people also don't realize you have to update your PC's VirusScan DAT files if you don't subscribe to one of the automatic updating services.

It is a sad situation indeed. For those of you with Unix based desktops, arent you glad that you are running a logical and secure OS?

Maybe this will be the sign that mass consumers need to make the switch. Hell Apple did it.

I have Outlook and I have yet to be hit by any of these viruses.

The problem is that despite years of viruses being sent through email attachments, imbecils still open unknown attachments.

According to the f-secure news story, it will start at 5am Saturday Sydney time... it's 7am Sydney time now, so it's happening?

"F-Secure?s Hyppönen said that as the deadline approached, the targeted computers were pointing to a non-existent file on the www.sex.com domain. But he told Techworld.com that he anticipated the virus writer or writers would change the target address shortly before the deadline arrived."

                                                          Hmmm, very interesting......

One thing that none of the articles mention: do infected computers stop sending out those #$&* emails once they enter the second phase?
