    Evacuate your house

My Aunt and Uncle just built a brand new house up in the Okanogan and the forest fires are so bad that most likely will have to evacuate their house within the next hour or so. The can even see the flames from their windows. The fire is only a mile and a half away from them. I feel so bad for them. All that hard work going to shit.

What would you take with you if you had only an hour to pack all your shit?

kids, animals, important papers folder, computers. (In that order.)
the rest of it can burn.

Hopefully their house will be spared but even if it's not, they've got their lives and that's the only thing that matters. The rest of it, even 'heirlooms', are just material things.

PS - The fire could miss it totally, I've seen strange things like that happen.
Up in PA there was a tornado that ripped up the mountain my grandparents lived on. Devastated everything and I mean *everything* on the side of that mountain.

Except for one house... it did a circle around the house, 50 feet away the entire way around... and then just kept on trucking. It's like the house had a tornado-proof bubble around it. Weirdest thing you've ever seen.

You know how crop circles have stalks of corn laid down in circular patterns? That's how the trees - full grown trees - were laid down in a circle around this house. All stripped bare of their leaves and most of their branches, but laid down perfectly around the house like a crop circle. Cool as hell.

Yes they do. This fire was started by lighting, so they called the agency to make sure they were covered just incase it burns down.

I would grab some pictures (I have thousands of negatives - 30+ years worth - in a safe deposit box), my kid can get out on his own, the dogs, the cat, my rolodex which has ALL my passwords, bank accounts, etc., my back up disks and a few pairs of clean underwear. Everything else is insured.

Hope everything works out with your Aunt and Uncle!!!!

Worst part about it is that my grandparents just moved into the suite downstairs.

The couple next door haven't even finished building their house yet.

that's really not strange for a tornado at all. they are a very strange breed of storm. they'll tear apart an entire farm, then rip all the paint off a house, but leave the house standing. then go a few miles down the road and toss a combine into the next county.

just think for a minute how much a combine weighs

Yes, they should be covered by their insurance company unless they have an act of God exclusion, but I doubt it. They should check with the company just to make sure.

I am amazed at how many fires burn so much during the summer. The saddest thing is that the start of them are mostly stupid people.

Hope your aunt and uncle get out okay.

If it was me having an hour to pack, I would grab myself, my money, credit cards, drivers license, check/saving books, birth certificate, social security card, any important papers (insurance, will, etc.) and my photo album of my family. My computer, books, music, comics and all that could burn. Oh, I might grab a change of clothes too.

I feel ya bro... my mom has been evacuated 3 times, and lost most of the house every time. Not to fire, but flood.... which is almost as destructive. Just make sure they get out of there.

When they had those huge malibu fires, for a while it was heading towards Calabasas / Hidden Hills where our house was.

I was on the Ventura Freeway racing home to save my 3 dogs and 4 cats and the traffic came to a dead stop and all I could see were huge plumes of smoke and I thought that's it they'll all be dead.

Luckily, the wind changed directions and it didn't cross over into Calabasas.

They just got news that two out of the four houses in their culdesac are left standing. The other two are burnt to a crisp. They aren't sure if they lost their house or not. What a shitty deal.
