    Holy Crap - I Passed The Bar Exam

    It was my first try. I went to law school in CA but moved to OR last year. The test sucked and I didn't like my chances. OR tests some different stuff and I only had eBay books to study with. Seeing my name on the pass list this afternoon kinda blew me away.

    So, anyone need legal services in Oregon (gotta get sworn in first)? Show me some love.

                                  How long do you have to study in your country to become to be a lawyer?
                                  I am just wondering, because I am applying this year at Law University to Prague, and it's really hard to get there. My exam is suppouste to be next two months, so I am kind under stress...., you know what I mean.

                                                  Thanks for the nice words. Now if I can just get a real legal job, I'll be set. The Portland metro job market kinda sucks right now. I can always hang out a shingle and do bankruptcies - they seem to be all the rage these days.

                                                  In the U.S., you generally have to have a 4-year college degree, decent grades and score well on the LSAT (law school admissions test). If you get in, law school is typically 3 years full-time. I took 4 because of work. Then you have to pass the your state's bar exam, which is only held twice a year.

                                                                      I remember when I walked out of the Florida Bar exam in 1993 and everyone I know was sure they flunked. The running joke was "we liked the exam so much we're coming back in six months to take it again!"

                                                                      I too was saying "Holy Crap!" when I found out I had passed (first try too, thank God).

                                                                              Thanks. I was sure it wasn't the last time for me either. I guess everyone does shitty because it's a tough test, it's just a matter of how shitty compared to everyone else! Are you practicing in any capacity, or just using it for business?

                                                                                      Practiced for 5.5 yrs doing criminal defense and some transactional. I keep an active bar number and have been used for copyright and trademark work occasionally since 1997. Our office in Miami has three Fl bar members out of 55 staff members and none of the three practice actively. One is an editor, one manages HR and Operations and I manage the web division.
