I was 13 and was playing around in my uncle's pickup truck while it was parked in our driveway. The driveway had a slight slope to it, and whilst fucking around I disengaged the parking brake. The truck started rolling. I panicked and jumped out.
An old black guy who was our yard man dropped his rake and hobbled toward the truck to try to do something. He tried to reach in for the brake but he fell and the rear tire rolled over his already festering foot. He's on the ground moaning.
I'm watching this all in a daze from behind the bushes. The truck picks up speed as it curves down the driveway, then rams into the back of my dad's gleaming BMW, which lurches forward and crumples in the closed door of our garage.
Finally everything comes to a stop.
The yard man almost lost his foot. A few years later he said he forgave me. My dad never left me off the hook for the accident. He still brings it up whenever I'm about to make a big move in life. Always finds a way to remind me of my big fuck up.
