    Microsoft Site braces for Web attack (August 16)

    Starting Saturday, August 16, each computer infected by the "MSBlaster" or "LoveSAN" Internet worm will begin sending packets of data several times per second to the Microsoft site (windowsupdate.microsoft.com)in an attempt to knock it offline.

                      They must have started early or something. I haven't been
                      able to reach Windows Updates for two days now.

                                              can installing a stand alone firewall , like ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) preven t such attack? has anyone tried this before?

                                                  Depending on the type of packets it might be possible to filter them with a firewall. However, we're talking about the potential of hundreds of thousands or millions of connected PCs doing this... how someone plans for that kind of attack, beats the fuck out of me!

                                                              yes.. same here.. either an attack started OR the most likely scenerio is 1000's of people trying to update windows that haven't been doing it all along are slowing the server to a crawl.
