If you can't afford that try Santa Monica which is up North closer to LA and Hollywood.
If you don't need a nightlife, then move to Newport/Irvine. You'll find some of the wealthiest people. People like Tye (beanie babies), Gillette brothers, Johnny Cash Penny, and the Founder of Marie calendars... etc etc.. thats the level of wealth in Newport..
try westsiderentals.com if you're looking for a rental.

at least on the tv show 'the o.c.'
Ok I'll bite.
First it's O.C.C. (Orange County Choppers)
Second O.C.C. is in New York
Third Orange County in Los Angeles is in the middle of nowhere. The reason Orange
County exists is because Disneyland is near there.

How much money do you have?
If you are buying then you'll need over a mil to get a shitty house by the beach.
If you rent you'll need over $2,000.00 p/m to get a shithole by the beach.
Laguna Beach. Nice little place...bring your wallet.
Malibu fits your description, as does any city with the word "Beach" in it. (Other than Long Beach and Venice Beach. Ick.)
Hermosa Beach
Manhattan Beach
Redondo Beach
Topanga
With Topanga and Malibu, the Homeowner's Insurance is ass-raping high. Erthquakes, landslides, dust storms...
Hollywood Hills if you want to be near all the movie stars/action. South Hollywood if you like the gay/lesbian community. (Also cheaper to live there, and nicer)
Beverly Hills if you can afford it.
Enjoy.

As far as the husband knows, the only thing in West Hollywod is gangs, but then, he didn't do much hanging out there. He thought that SoHo was where all of the gay/lesbian community is.
He could be wrong, he stayed closer to Manhattan beach/Hermosa Beach/and over into Riverside back in the day. You may well be right, Fletch.

ibve never even heard of "SoHo" until you say it today and I live right here.
West Hollywood is where all the gay clubs are and is a very nicer part of Hollywood.
In fact the gay part of Hollywood is one of the nicer places to live in Hollywood, if you can deal with the aparment complexes filled with guys who like guys.
Ive known straight guys that enjoy living there becauser its nicer, but it is very, very gay. All the stoores and everything are homosexual.
I shit you not there is even a "Gay Mart" i keep telling myself to grab a picture.
there is no south hollywood, never heard of soho, the way this valley is there really isnt a south if that makes sense
west hollywood is the gay part, I go there all the time, some nice clubs that are not gay are located there.
but its clear to see where the packs and packs of men are in front of clubs and its pretty easy to tell which clubs are gay heheh
Hollywood is its own city with police department but its seperated by the Hollywood Hill, north hollywood is on one side the hill and hollywood the other, there is west, east and north, but not south... no clue why, never heard someone even use the phrase...
I got out of California because it was just too expensive. San Diego is one of the most expensive cities around. For a 600 sq apt in a decent area like mission valley its over $1,000
Even food at fast food places is jacked up. A combo meal at wendys is like a dollar more there. It all adds up.

san diego is also leading us in gas prices right now. i predict san diego to hit 3 bucks before LA. I hope neither do...
its even higher than here in LA.
places like Venice beach are sometimes a little cheaper, just maybe not as nice.
Started in Napa, then moved to Santa Barbara now moved to Huntington Beach.
They all their weaknesses like over priced rent, the beach here is crazy though in the summer.
I might check out Hollywood next, but I will probably just move back to Napa. People are little more real there. Not a big bar jumper and even if i was the bars around here suck.
The city shuts down the beach aroun 10 and no drinking or camping is allowed. I think we got the butt of all the shit from the 70's, now these beach towns are wound up tooo tight.
Like the desert needs the rain

San Diego is just a plain ol beautiful place. It's probably the nicest city in the US overall when you consider the restaurants, the people and the incredible scenery.
If you like a bit more excitement/nightlife check out the beach areas in LA. Of the Cali options LA is definitely my favorite. You can't go wrong anywhere in the LA costal community except for Venice. The people who live close to the beach are generally a lot more relaxed and quite a bit more down to earth than the usual "hollywood" types so don't be afraid of that aspect of it.
The Bay area is also very nice. If you have the chips check out Sausalito which is close to San Francisco. You can get some views in the bay area that you can't get anywhere else in the country.
The San Diego answers are right, but bring your checkbook as well as anyone else's you can steal.....it's not just housing (2k+ per month for a nice apt, 1M+ for a nice house, as long as you don't have to be right on the water) and gas prices ($2.50 and rising) that are ridiculous here, it's everything...even in the supermarket, any item you pick up is 50 cents to a buck more expensive here than it is in most parts of the country...
it's stil fucking gorgeous, though
