Did you actually take history while at school, or did they skip everything that happened outside you State more than 50 years ago?
The English and French owned a very large chunk of the world, getting thrown out eventually does not mean it did not work very nicely. Only difference was in those days you could be honest and say you were colonising, today you have to come out with all the BS to justify it.
