Naw, they don't venture this far into town for another month or two.

There are many cheap companies that do trap and release programs for most animals. (skunks are always killed).

LadyM - try spraying the outside of the cans and the lids with bitter apple spray, which is available in most pet stores. That should help and it won't hurt the raccoon.

If you don't want to kill it, you can get one of those box traps to capture them.

It's just a cage that has a sliding door on one end. You stick some food on the inside, and when the raccoon enters to get the food it slams the door behind it. When you release it, make sure it's a long way away, or they'll find their way back. (preferably across a river or two)

My parents used to have the same problem. They couldn't shoot it because it was in town, and they were getting sick of the massive amounts of raccoon shit all over their deck.
