it's one of those movies where people who didn't get it, say it was good to make them appear more hip... kinda like they do with mullholland drive.
this guy sums it up.....

"I'm predicting "Donnie Darko" will be the year's most overrated film. It smells like the kind of movie that wants you to think it's really deep, causing people to claim they loved it even though they actually found it incomprehensible.
I defy you to tell me what this movie is about and point out portions of it to support your theory. It's occasionally about the opposite emotions of love and fear and what falls in between them, but it's also sometimes about fate and predestination. For that matter, sometimes it's a character study, and other times it's a science-fiction time-travel fantasy. But it is none of these things long enough or with enough commitment to develop any of them. As a result, it's a mish-mash of disparate, non-cohesive ideas, the sort of film that thinks it's brilliant just because no one understands it.

donnie darko is an awesome movie. it never made it big because the average person couldn't take it all in. and most people who dislike it simply dont understand it. sad
Very similar to the Lynch deathbed-fantasizing-what-could've-been style. I always enjoy those types more the second time around when I already know the ending.

Sorry to sadden you with my intellectual inferiority. It must be very frustrating for you to be around so many people who can't understand things on the same level as you.
Do you feel your superhuman intelligence to be a gift or a curse?
well my friends who prefer brainless action flicks hated donnie darko, and those who hate brainless action flicks loved it. personally i thought it was a great movie and while i had to watch it a few times to grasp the 'concept' i thought the movie was great and definatly a nice change of pace from the usual mass marketed crap hollywood has been putting out, at least its not a sequel or a remake.
you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day..

I read hundreds of "positive" reviews about this brain fart.
They go on and on about how smart it is, how talented the director is, how good the acting was, how stupid the people that didn't like this movie are, the wonderfully dark atmosphre, how well made it was, and every other generic comment one could possibly make, bit not one single fucking review answers the question...

what the fuck was this movie is about?
if you can sum up what a movie is about in a few sentences then it couldn't of been too good in my opinion.

It's been awhile since I watched it.
But to sum it up (if I remember correctly) He avoids a freak accident where he should have died and meets this girl who he is in love with? The girl dies later on in an accident being with him.
He gets sent back to the time before he avoided death and decides to basically commit suicide in order to spare the girls life that he was in love with.
