Argh Hard Disk Failing

I have 3 harddisks on my computer. One of them is for data.

When I tried to boot my comp today the data harddisk (40 GBs) started making clicking noises, like click click click click, around 15 times, and then the comp booted without that harddisk in explorer. It's happening again and again.

What might be wrong?? Its a seagate 5200 40 GB a year old. Was working with no problems till yesterday.

The clicking is likely the heads crashing into the platter(s). If you get a chance again, back up the information to another drive and do a warranty replacement on the failing drive. You're going to have a physical failure on your hands shortly.

hmmm maybe it cant read all sectors and is stuck in a particular place thus the clicking/scratching noise.

with one of my hdd i had the same noise but it seemed to just fix it self

i dunno if it keeps happening maybe you could try putting the hdd in another machine see if that works.

other than that i dont know what else you can do
i hope you backed up your data

It wont recognise the harddisk. I have unplugged its power and the comp boots ok with the other harddisk, but when I plug this in it starts clicking and then boots without the harddisk showing. Could it be a connection problem or is it failed for sure?

I would pay someone to extrack your data from one of them professional services.. You run a high risk of fucking shit up even more if you keep messing with it..

Every time you power that shit up, the more it clicks the more your sectors go bad or whatever...

Just send it to the pros if theres important shit..
We had to do that to a drive.. cost us like $270

and thats if they do or dont find anything for you..

Ok .. this may sound stupid but its worth a try!

Get your harddrive and put it in a freezer bag, or plastic bag.. doesn't matter. Leave it in there for 30-40 mins.

Then take it out, and run to the computer.. plug it in [leave it in the bag].. try to get all the water n shit off the bag first.

You should get the h-d on its last limbs.. then get your money back :@

And no i'm not joking this saved 30gb of essential data I needed before

Oh and if you know what your doing, unscrew the top and take a look for yourself.. however try the freezer first. cause once the top is off.. if you screw it up while putting it back on your only choice is professional recovery ^^

Unfortunately, exact same thing happened to my 80GB seagate (6 months old) about a week ago..

I have removed the drive, let it cool about an hour then re-pluged to the system. This time windows detects it & I could be able to recover %90 of my data. I'm waiting for the replacement now.

I guess that's caused by the temperature.. If I were you, I would try Project-Shadow's suggestion first..
