I decided to compare some month to month conversions for one of the free type email programs I have been promoting for some time. I won't mention which one, but look at the difference between July 17 - 25 2003 and July 17 - 25 2002. Exactly same traffic sources. Same number of exit consoles. And I don't buy the argument that the surfer is getting used to free porn. There are 10's of thousands of new surfers every single day. And my stats from 2001 to 2002 didn't differ a whole lot.

So, in 2003 23,000 uniques earned $144 or .006 cents per exit.
In 2002, 50,500 earned $1292 or .03 cents per exit (500% more)

Has the industry really crashed that badly??

And this is why I think it keeps getting worse. Judging from the replies to this thread, nobody challenges the dramatic decreases..and simply accepts it as a natural slow down in business.

Another puzzling part of the equation is that my ads are also still the same. Which means that the people clicking on the ads still think they are going to a Free email site. So, the standard arguments just don't hold any water.
Argument 1) If they didn't sign up for the free email site the first time, why would they click on the same ad a second time.
Argument 2) Too much free porn. If they are looking for free porn, why would they not jump at the chance to sign up for a free membership.

ok, your ratios are 5 times worser that last year.
But if you'd send hits to paysites and convert last year at :1300 and now at 1:1500, i'd get worried.

I really think that the amount of spam emails makes ppl not giving away their emails.

The fact that in generall it's getting harder to sell memberships has many reasons ( less new surfers, dubius billing practices, the amount of free porn etc. ) is true and I also think that to many webmasters think they can't do anything about it...

I don't use ICQ anymore.

Good try...but look at the stats, and my description above. The clickthrus related to my overall traffic volume is almost idenetical. I throw less traffic at these ads now, so that is why last year an average of 4,000 clickthrus per day and this year 2,000. So, brainchild, this would indicate that the ads themselves are still resulting in encouraging the surfer to clickthru. The drop in sign-ups is happening on the sponsors end, not mine.

But then again, why bother...why don't I just set up a intrusive trojan on one of my pages, like you do with your stopannoyingpopups.com page, and merrily infect my customers computers with the winpup32.exe trojan. Do you even know how to make an honest dollar?

I give up....if an ad is still encouraging the same amount of people to clickthru...then there is little or no reason to switch. In fact, in this case the opposite is true. I can be assured that my clickthrus are primarily from new unique visitors. The repeat visitors have already seen my ads, and wouldn't click thru a second time. And since they didn't sign-up the first time, what would be the value of tricking them into visiting a second time around.

12Clicks...as always your comments surprise me. You run one of THE must damaging exploit and trojan download popup programs on the net and your Standard Internet home page and general popups haven't changed one iota in at least a couple of years.

At least I stop short of potentially causng unwary surfers considerable inconvenience and malicious damage to their system registries. Remind me again why you think you are a businessman?

Wow I haven't been around for a while and things still haven't changed.

Let's discuss the free e-mail programs. A year ago it was a (reasonably) fresh concept that not quite so many people were pushing. There had been e-mail programs before but weg, freezinebucks and the like have been making it look like you could get access to 40 paysites for free. Have you ever actually signed up to peek at the members area? There isn't jack shit there but alot of sponsor links. Not only that, but the e-mails never stop.

So for $1 you've converted a freeloading surfer into:
1) Someone who gave out his e-mail address for essentially nothing but some sponsor links and a truckload of spam.
2) A surfer who will give up on the "free sign up" shit and possibly break down and pay for their niche.
3) Someone to tell all their friends to not sign up for that shit.

Not to mention the fact that everyone's been bombarded with ads for the same sites already, it's lost the "WOW GREAT DEAL" appeal.

Now as far as 12clicks goes, where is this illegal material you speak of? Spyware is an accepted and widely used marketing strategy(KaZaA or Gator anyone?). I delete that shit off my computer all the time, but I realize the money making potential. Check out the top ranked Alexa sites and see how many of them get their traffic from spyware.

The key is to keep jumping programs. Just because it was hot last year doesn't mean its going to be worth shit this year, even if you are sending the same traffic.

Program isn't new anymore, surfer has seen it a million times, there are better programs and sites to push, plus you are likely being shaved as the program operator regrets paying out so much to you last year.
