    DMOZ Anyone?

Anyone get a site listed at DMOZ recently?

I haven't submitted there in ages, but I still get a decent little bit of SE traffic to all the sites that have been listed there from way back when.

Do they ever review and update their index anymore? Or is it not even worth filling out the submit form?

I'm an editor at DMOZ. The reason it takes forever to get listed is that billions of people submit sites every single day, usually to the wrong category. It takes forever to wade through the crap to find the ones worthy of being listed.

Wrong. There are always bad apples but they get caught and they get removed from the pool of editors. Most of us believe in the Open Directory Project and work to make it the best it can be. The editors work on a 100% volunteer basis. Sorry if we're not listing your sites fast enough to suit you. Go play with Google.

Unless you are way up in the editor chain, you can't stuff the directory with enough of your sites to make it worth your time, anyway. I've never added a site I own to any category I edit in.

          Dmoz is lame.

They didn't update the Adultbouncer section forever, the editor was from AB and just added his sites then moved off. So I applied for his job several times, so add my sites obviously a whole bunch of other good AB sites, no reply to the application whatever.. so after like 5 months of not being listed I finally go on their forums, and they are all like "well we don't have an ab password to check member sections"

So out of good graces a spend a bunch of time writing emails as a middle man to get them a Adultbouncer password. Finally they are like "oh thanks we got it, but your sites are near the bottom of the que they won't be up for awhile".. I don't think they have added one adultbouncer site since they got that password well over a month ago, and it was a good 5 months before then when a site from AB was added, why didn't they just rip through the que adding all the sites on it in a couple hours?? Or get a new friggen editor.

Bahh.. I just had to rant because it was annoying me.

              Don't even bother.

You have to promote certain sponsors to get listed.

Ffabian or Janet Berg or George Bush agree with me.

                It's not that simple.

                1) The queues are sometimes HUGE. When I say huge, I mean literally thousands of unreviewed sites.
                2) There are hundreds and hundreds of rules, regulations and criteria to be considered with every single site you review. When you become an editor it is suggested that you not review any sites for the first several days and instead spend that time reading through the editor-related literature. There are dozens and dozens of pages of information, rules and procedures that you need to familiarize yourself with.
                3) The directory is enormous. You get a lot of submissions that don't belong in your category and it can eat up a huge chunk of your editing time seeing that these get where they belong. Even if you were to just delete those submissions, by the time you get to that step you've already reviewed the site.
                4) We are volunteers. There is very little reward for being a DMOZ editor. I can't speak for the other editors but I do it because I believe in the mission of the ODP.
                5) The behavior of any single editor does not reflect on the rest of us. Maybe whoever was in charge of the AdultBouncer category just wasn't on the ball. AVS's appear, disappear, change names, change policy and generally morph constantly. For editors, it's hard to keep up with the changes.

DMOZ is not lame, it's fantastic. The only problem with DMOZ is handling the incredible amount of data pushed through it.

                    Perhaps true in certain cats.

But! I only listed my own sites

I'm sure I was not alone. I know my friends did/do exactly the same.

if there is that much of a backlog then they need to actually approve applications for more reviewers. I gave up applying for BBW cats because half the time I went all the way through applying to get a message that they weren't accepting people for that cat. Then why don't they remove the apply link from that cat then?

I checked out DMOZ for the first time in a long time and there is so much crap in there now. They need to stop posting on thier editor board and start reviewing and cleaning up the cats. I have a few sites in there and they dont send hits like they use to, which is very disappointing!

I've never heard of that. Are you applying in the smallest possible category for BBW (or at least one at the very bottom of the tree)? You should always apply for a bottom-level category.

Hahaha the dmoz editors adult board is pathetic.

People have, and always will, been taking care of their OWN sites and been trying to get an excuse to not list competitors.

Fabris was honest I think - loooong time ago.

I've applied for both general and very specific cats..the specific cats is where I fill out the whole thing only to get the message that they aren't taking editors in those cats.

It isn't just BBW ..I also applied in a specific AVS cat where I feel I am qualified.

I have litterly years worth of reviewing experience and I know my topic inside and out but I'm not accepted..fine but then don't be suprised whtn there is a backlog.

When dmoz was hot tons editors were webmasters who jammed as many of thier sites in the listing as they could OR had their friends add them into their cats.... I use to have people offer me money to list them, it was a freak show then and I'm sure it still is now. And forget about the little groups of editors that thought their shit didnt stink! Seems it went downhill fast... too bad cause it had potential.

What ever Space Ace I have applied as a reviewer several times and never get accepted.

I have submitted sites in the past and got them accepted.

So I would Ass-U-Me that if I can write a description to get listed I could list as well butt no go so far!

They are always complaining about the need for more reviewers butt they don't let anyone become a reviewer so catch 22

Dmoz should move to a pay for inclusion model like Yahoo. That would get rid of all the corruption. Get rid of all the "volunteers" as well while you're at it and put some professionals on the payroll. Why waste time with all this crap and wait forever to be listed? Just pay them and get it over with

yeah, and maybe a subscription fee for x number of sites per domain.

They accepted me, so I know it isn't that no one gets in. All the people in this thread whining about corruption and talking about the directory being stuffed with the editor's sites simply don't know what they are talking about. There are always bad apples but the DMOZ editor culture on the whole is all about doing what's right for the ODP.
