rackshack.net good or bad

i have heard many people telling that rackshack.net is a bad hosting...i haved people telling that rackshack.net is a good hosting..
i think more and more serious to get a dedicated server... now i host my sites on virtual with 0.85$/Gb prepaid bandwidth and i pay around 40$/month so i guess that is better to buy a server from rackshack (89$/month - 700Gb) and transfer my sites there and make a few new sites..

i need an advice from webmasters who aready use ar have used rackshack: will be this a good move from me or not?

umm dont bother with rackshack then get a managed server.

Don't waste your time then. Build a server at home a learn how to administr it before you go to rackshack.

yeah, it requires someone to be on the other end to take care of everything, and that costs money

i've run my own servers, but the only reason i haven't done that is 2 fold. 1, i've heard from a number of people that if something dies on their end that has nothing to do with your box, you still could be fucked. and 2. i don't know how to setup all the DNS stuff right. never really needed to, so haven't bothered to learn.

i think imma go buy some books this week...

beside of my sittes that acualy i have on virtual i have a few more an freehosts
if i move all my sites on new host and i make some new sites i think that i will arrive easy untill 200-300Gb/month
a few month i had a tgp with 60k/day who burn it self around 100Gb/month and becouse was on virtual i had problems with the mysql database and the site droaped on 15k today..

so, i think for 200-300Gb/month i should take a server, i'm right?

most places will charge about 50$ extra to manage.

www.webhostingtalk.com is a good forum for webhosting companies. if you are looking for dedicated companies.

stay away from fdcservers.net and unitedcolo.om united hosts a lot of spam customers. if you setup email. your ip block will be spammed to death.

You should get a managed Dedicated Server for at least 6 months. If after a 6 month crash course you feel comfortable beign an admin then drop the management service.

300GB of transfer is not cost effective in a shared enviroment. A RS server is a good deal for what you get. You just need to find someone to manage it. If you would like us to manage it for you eme.

I'm not sure that being able to simply administer the server is enough.

Shortly after I got mine (within 2 or 3 days) it came under intense attack from hackers. I think they sit and wait for new machines to come online and then try and break into them and root them.

Fortunately I'd already been improving security - which out of the box is not very good. But the point is for someone who doesn't know this shit - you need to be comfortable setting yourself up against hackers... Do YOU think you could keep them out of your machine? If the answer is you're not sure or you don't know then I wouldn't go down this route. You have too much to loose potentially.

Get a server at home and learn first. If you don't have time use a managed server. The extra money it costs may be worth it as protection!

I have two boxes at Rack Shack and have been very happy.

I had no experience before I got started and have had no major problems. Just a small learning curve.

I should add hackers attacking is not anything unusual or specific to Rackshack. I think the Rackshack deal is good all in all and I have no complaints about their service. I'm just trying to point out there may be more to the job then meets the eye at first.

Isn't that a little risky?

I don't do web hosting, or have a huge amount of traffic, but I still manage to spread myself over 3 different servers and networks... it will probably be 4 by the month's end.

We've kinda got a little of everything.

1 managed dedicated Unix server
1 unmanaged dedicated Windows server
1 colocated Unix server

and the one at RS.

We'd had a lot of practice with our colo, but even so we ran into some initial bumps in getting the RS server running smoothly (that was mostly b/c Ensim was unfamiliar territory)

I don't recommend trying it unless you have at least SOME prior experience administering some sort of server. (and no, your home PC does not count) It's not as easy as you might think - even with documentation. I know the price is tempting, but if you don't know what you're doing, you'll end up losing out ... on both time and money.

We like our RS box, though. No problems from the company ... though it kinda sucks having to pay sales tax on our hosting - all 4 servers are local, although not all with RS.
