After being in the U.S. Military for 8 years, yes, you do lose most of your constitutional rights while enlisted...although nobody in charge in the military would say you had. You can get charged for destruction of govt. property for getting a sunburn (you are govt. property). It happened to a friend of mine that got a bad sunburn while out water ski-ing.

As far as this case goes, he was using a navy issued laptop, which is in effect property of the Canadian govt. So, even if it was his personal internet account...it's still military gear used.
