Major shit in the Philippines

They say about 100 special forces soldiers have taken over a big building in the downtown area of Manilla and wired it with explosives. They are claiming their government is selling arms to the muslim rebels there and blaming bombings on the muslim groups to try and get more aid from the US. This could be interesting.

That is pretty fucked up, and as usual nobody else in the country has a clue about what is going on, I live 80km. north of Manila, and we only had a few news reports in TV, but see nothing different in day to day life at all... Business as usual...

I am trying to call a friend of mine down in Manila, to see how things are down there. But the problems are probably isolated to Makati, more specifically the Glorietta Shopping Mall for now.

Could get interesting tonight on CNN. The president of the Philippines set a deadline of 5pm for them to surrender or face military action.

I also read a report that some of the troops that were sent down there and taking up positions around the buildings for if they are ordered to fight, actually went up close and were shaking hands and talking with the special forces guys who are holding the building and hostages. So who knows if those troops will be willing to attack their own friends if they are ordered to. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

5 Hours to go... It does not seem like they are giving up. The reports on local TV here are telling that they are ready to die for this.

I would not be surprised if the rebels has supporters in the forces preparing to attack them in a few hours, it could get really messy. Fighting rebels in the Capital is never a good thing.

still quiet up north, and I do not suspect anything happening up here, we didnt feel any problem during the last uprising 1-1½ year ago, when Estrada was toppled and Arroyo took over...

The mall they took over is only 1/4 mile from my house.

I am in the states on vacation, but it is nice to see photos of tanks in front of my subdivision.

Plastic explosives where I get my groceries ...

The rumor in Manila is this rebel group is closely associated with one of the presidential cand. in 2004 election.

The Austrialian ambass. is safe, he lives in the Oakwood Suites that is in the mall, they let him go.

Business is normal in Manila from what I here, no one is panicing.

i live in the Philippines too. an hour away from the building. not much happening except for all the malls near the building closing down. pretty fucked up, i don't have classes tomorrow coz of that.
