There might be a way around it but I wouldn't take any chances.

save your work on floppy disk or cd first, then reinstall Win98.

Above is a couple of the reasons GFY has gone for shit over that last couple of years.
This site started as adult webmasters swapin' info and when someone has a legitimate
webmaster (computer) related question they either get bullshit like what twistyneck posted
or dumb-ass nooB I-have-no-idea-what-I'm-doing remarks like what sumphatpimp posted.

So asuna comes in with a legit question cause he isn't sure and all he gets is bullshit.

Use a WinME bootdisk (more cd-rom drivers that Win98 bootdisk) and cd to the drive and run setup.exe
get your serial # for WinME ready.

                WinME bootdisk
                http://www.24by7.ca/files/bootme.exe

An overtop install will not delete anything. You have to actually format the drive to lose shit.

You should back up the following folders:

                        Favorites
                        My Documents

Move them to another disk or to a network computer, burn to CD/DVD or leave them in another folder (besides the windows directory or drive root) if you must.

It will overwrite MSIE's favorites, which isnt a problem if they dont use IE. I cannot remember if it overwrites outlook's mail stores or not, but e-mail is my livlihood so I back it up anyway. Back that up for sure if you need anything in there, otherwise dont.

But with Win98 it is better to format anyway.
