We used different definitions of GDP. You used Purchasing Power Parity (GDP) and I did not. Purchasing Power Parity is excellent for comparing standard of living indexes but not as good for comparing ability to purchase and sell goods (weapons?) and services.

2)You are using your values to judge another country's setup and government to determine whether or not they are successful. It's that same tunnel vision that has gotten us into the Iraqi mess: And that is that EVERY country, no matter what it's culture or history, MUST have a democractic government to be deemed "legitimate" and "successful."

Sometimes even a "benign despot" works. If not..why does the U.S. support the governments of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, etc etc?

I'm all for this. I'm tired of the US (more specifically my tax dollars)
contributing to something it no longer benefits from.
